I changed the gear oil today after putting the first 1000 mi. on a newly rebuilt AA Transaxle 2WD manual transmission. This is the first time I've ever done this job myself. I pumped in a little less than 1.5 gallons before it started to overflow. My driveway is on a slight incline a few degrees so I'm not sure the gear oil level is right. I remember reading a Samba post about the ideal level being 1/8" below the fill hole. I've also read the Vanagonaut recommendation to fill it till it overflows. Is the fact that the van was facing uphill slightly when it overflowed still good enough? It is shifting slightly easier than before.
Transmission is mated to a stage II chipped eTDI and AA recommended Swepco 210 so that is what I used. Not cheap BTW.
Thanks in advance. |

Yup you should be good if it came out the fill hole. Some say to fill it a little below the bottom of the fill hole.
Enjoy the AA Tranny, Matt does great work, he had a very very good teacher!

Stock gas trans hold 3.2 quarts. Just had mine rebuilt and he told me to put that much in. Not until it comes out the fill hole. 1.5 gals!!

Saying that specs are different than dimensions doesn't make sense. Porsche specs/VW specs/engineering specs are nothing but a series of dimensions, sizes, percentages, measurements, etc. |

On the slight incline, I drained over 1 1/4 gallons in about 10-15 mins. |

IIRC VW recommended running the oil 1/2" below the fill to improve shifting, or some such BS. I fill mine until is starts to run out the fill hole and then start the plug in quickly to keep the loss to a minimum. Having the level 100% exact isn't all that important, you don't want to be a quart high or low though. A half pint in difference in either direction isn't important. |

If you want you can always park someplace level and remove the fill plug and let the gear oil out until it is level with the plug hole. No big deal to do that. |
It was bugging me today that maybe not having it level yesterday really did matter, so I leveled the van and went back underneath. About 1/3 of a quart drained out this time. Now I know it's properly level with the fill hole. Hope this helps someone else in the future.
Thanks for all the feedback. |
