I am building a 1641 for a buddy and the engine he brought me to start with has some interesting repairs already done to it. It has a VEGE tag over the original engine number, so I am going to assume they did this.
On either side of the oil pan, around .07 has been machined off and thin steel sheets were installed with roll pins and it looks like some sort of adhesive. Both of the patches were rusty and torn up, one stayed with the sled tin.
My opinion is that we should junk the case and replace it, I'm leery about how thick the case is now at that point and the fact that the ears for the sled tin are basically toast, it's not worth messing with.
Anyone run into this before? I have torn down a ton of engines and this is the first time I have encountered anything like this.

Looks like the outside has been exposed to water. If the inside is like that, its trash. _________________ Glenn

Why would someone put those metal strips on the case like that? If it is oxidized so bad that it was leaking oil there I would not use it even if it's ok inside. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

The engine oil was surprisingly clean, the pushrod tubes were rusty on the outside, but pretty clean on the inside. The bus had been sitting for a while in a yard, so it has been exposed to the elements.
I've had 2 other VEGE engines apart and this one was similar to them, nice set of repaired heads and dished 85.5 pistons, I assumed they did good work from their other engines I have opened up.
I really think I'm going to use a different case, I was just making sure I wasn't out of the loop and this is something normal. _________________ Matt Johnson

It was a common practice up North that if the sled tin attachment areas of the case were corroded, or damaged, a thin steel plate was attached to the side of the case with either tapped holes/inserts to replace the damaged areas to bolt the tins back on. There's probably nothing wrong with the case, other than the little sled tin ears are missing. If you don't want to use it, if it checks out internally, I'm sure there's lots of buggy guys that don't run sled tins that would buy it off of you. |

Thanks for the heads up. I have several other cases here that I can use, it's an early bay, so that mount is needed. I have a like new as41 universal case I think I going to use to replace it, he wants to take long road trips with the bus so the objective is to have it as reliable and long lasting an engine as possible.
I'd prob run the case in one of my own cars or if it were a buggy and I could keep a close eye on it, but on a long road trip that thin wall is always going to be in the back of your mind. _________________ Matt Johnson

No kidding? I have never seen that done, this one was actually shaved down. Doesn't make much sense why you would do it since the steel against the aluminum alloy is a pretty good recipe for electrolysis. _________________ Matt Johnson

I have seen those before at the shop. GEX specials. They machine the side down and install this side metal plate w/ blind rivets so you can attach the sleds again.
It is not really necessary to machine it down that much. A new ear can be made or another piece of mag welded on there. Or just build up the worn area and re-tap. I know that is the expensive way to do it since it includes prep work and welding then machining. But the right was is not the easy way.
It might make a nice buggy engine.
But you want a much better case than that for sedan/bus use. Plenty around. just look a little more. |
