|
|
Hey all,
I happily moved my new '86 Weekender to a spot where I can start working on it. The first order of business was to get the old fuel hose outta there, and with the help of the Van Cafe kit, it went pretty easily. One thing confused me a bit. There is a short piece of 12mm hose included, along with two larger hose clamps and then lots of the 7mm and smaller clamps. Between the tank and the plastic fuel line, I found two barbs that needed the larger diameter- the one leading from the tank to the first junction (pre-filter? Wasn't sure what that was...). The other was either part of the fuel pump or the post pump filter (sorry, it's kinda late and I'm sleepy). What confuses me is that in both cases, the larger fuel line had to go from an appropriately large barb, down to a barb that would have made more sense for the 7mm line. Is this right? On top of it seeming odd, this would necessitate four large size clamps, rather than two, so I am wondering what I am missing here.
Everything in the engine bay went smoothly, so I am looking forward to any advice so that I can suss this out when I am back at the workspace tomorrow.
Many thanks, and apologies if I missed previous answers to this- I promise, I searched! _________________ 1986 Westy Weekender

ledogboy: If you still have the square white prefilter before the fuel pump, toss it. You should use the round, silver bosch filter after the pump.
So now the 12mm line should connect the fuel tank and the pump.
Hope this helps _________________ ________________________________________

Ok,
I hopped under the van, and I have a follow up question. The thing that precedes the fuel pump is not square, and it has one wire going into it that has been spliced from the hot fuel pump wire, and another wire goes to ground. Any idea what this is? Shall I eliminate it?

Wow! If it's not an electomagic fuel saving device than it could be an inline fuel shut off valve. Still a mystery. Terminate it.
On second thought - why is it there? The original pump has a cut off valve built in. Is your pump original? |

The pump definitely looks original to me, but just due to it's overall crustiness (I'm a newbie). I'll snap a shot once the ground dries from the pop top cleaning that I started whilst waiting for a response. My little arms are about to fall off from scrubbing moss!

Here's a photo of the pump. Not the best angle, but I was trying to avoid soaking myself...

Your tank should have a 12 mm outlet and your pump should have a 12mm inlet with nothing between the two but a single 12mm hose. The outlet of the pump is 7mm, while both the inlet and outlet to the metal filter are 7mm.
I would put everything back to the original late Vanagon set up. |

Sounds like a plan to me- I wonder what the heck this thing was here for? I cut the line earlier, so I'll have to make a trip to the FLAPS to get some more. Thanks for the replies! _________________ 1986 Westy Weekender

It looks just like an old electric fuel pump to me. No idea why it might be there though. I can't imaging that it wouldn't actually cut down on fuel flow. |
