Hey, I don't remember what is the ratio, well I know but what is the real deal on the road.
One of my future customer as a 82 or 83 (waiting for answer) and wants a conversion (2.5L Subi).
What will be the RPM at 60mph with the diesel transmission. I have plenty of gas / late bell housing.
Also, does it have the shifter output on the side or center?
I have spare van with good transmission and shift kit if needed.
Thanks, Ben _________________ Working with rust, grease, dirt and dust is a sad truth.

Ben, assuming the 5.43 ring and pinion.
Gearbox:- Vanagon Diesel Transmission 5.43 - .852 4th gear
Tyre:- 185/R14
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Top Gear gives 16.528 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 66.113 MPH at 4000 RPM
Engine speeds in top gear:-
30 MPH = 1815 RPM 40 MPH = 2420 RPM 50 MPH = 3025 RPM 60 MPH = 3630 RPM
70 MPH = 4235 RPM 80 MPH = 4840 RPM 90 MPH = 5445 RPM 100 MPH = 6050 RPM
Top Speed in 1 gear = 14.902 MPH
And changes into 2 gear at 2180 RPM dropping 1820 RPM
Top Speed in 2 gear = 27.344 MPH
And changes into 3 gear at 2447 RPM dropping 1553 RPM
Top Speed in 3 gear = 44.705 MPH
And changes into 4 gear at 2705 RPM dropping 1295 RPM
Top Speed in 4 gear = 66.113 MPH

Thanks for the recommendations on sheet metal panels. Do you think that panel adhesive would hold a camper roof section to a tin top that had been modified? I am thinking the adhesive would do a longer lasting job vs welding. mark _________________ ☮️ |

Ben, here at the Diesel 4 speed compared to the Air Cooled 4 speed if that helps.
Gearbox:- Vanagon Air Cooled Transmission 4.57 - .852 4th gear
Tyre:- 185/R14
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Top Gear gives 19.639 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 78.555 MPH at 4000 RPM
Engine speeds in top gear:-
30 MPH = 1528 RPM 40 MPH = 2037 RPM 50 MPH = 2546 RPM 60 MPH = 3055 RPM
70 MPH = 3564 RPM 80 MPH = 4074 RPM 90 MPH = 4583 RPM 100 MPH = 5092 RPM
Gearbox:- Vanagon Diesel Transmission 5.43 - .852 4th gear
Tyre:- 185/R14
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Top Gear gives 16.528 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 66.113 MPH at 4000 RPM
Engine speeds in top gear:-
30 MPH = 1815 RPM 40 MPH = 2420 RPM 50 MPH = 3025 RPM 60 MPH = 3630 RPM 70 MPH = 4235 RPM 80 MPH = 4840 RPM 90 MPH = 5445 RPM 100 MPH = 6050 RPM
Notice at 60 mph the air cooled transmission rpm is 3055 and the diesel transmission is 3630 rpm. Same tire size. The shorter the final drive, the higher the engine rpms. Here is the standard WBX 4 speed too.
Gearbox:- Vanagon WBX Transmission 4.86 - .852 4th gear
Tyre:- 185/R14
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Top Gear gives 18.467 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 88.641 MPH at 4800 RPM
Engine speeds in top gear:-
30 MPH = 1625 RPM 40 MPH = 2166 RPM 50 MPH = 2708 RPM 60 MPH = 3249 RPM
70 MPH = 3791 RPM 80 MPH = 4332 RPM 90 MPH = 4874 RPM 100 MPH = 5415 RPM
Make sense? mark _________________ ☮️ |
