That South African dash with the climate turn knobs is something very special. I have not seen this before and do wish this climate control set up is something that will catch on here. |

FWIW: All sliders to the right = "defrost mode" (full defrost, full heat, zero floor, zero rear vents)

And then of course, there's the European versions with only three levers.
This is a '89 Syncro Tristar. (only picture I have of levers)

I had the same no fan speed or switch hole cover in my 80 i bought for parts. But it was brown in color and the van had a supplemental blower. It was turned on buy a contact located on one of the control levers inside the dash control unit. It was a 1 speed supplemental blower located above the transmission/transaxle and like most aircooled vanagon stuff, there was a convoluted path to feed the airflow system.
This 80 model also had the gasoline heater installed, but those controls were in another location on the dash. I plan on taking the erbers-whatever it is called heater and installing it in my 82 camper. |

Thread was feeling incomplete without a picture of this rare beauty so here it is, in black:

Yeah - I get it completely, but the van is also driven much less often by my wife.

Thanks for this one. I printed it and will be taped on the dash.

Wow Kamzkab, nice printing layout. I'll be using those.
Dhaavers - did you notice that the second (heat) and 4th (rear vents) have little ribs on the knob? It's easy to use the 'Braille' method to know that those two are different than the others.
At least that's how it is on my '88. _________________ '88 VW Westfalia

on mom's 86 westy I removed the lower lever for the rear air..
she only drives it in the summer and never has passengers..
I'm }-{ this close to painting the heat lever 1/2 blue and 1/2 red to help her understand that one.. heck I just move it one way I get heat? no ok I move it the other way
on my 1980 van (had EARLY front heat w/o fan) I hooked the defog and floor cables to the same lever... sounded brilliant when I thought it up..
slide it right for dash left for floor and middle for both...
cept it doesn't ever have an off/closed position.. air is ALWAYS coming in either up-down or both. _________________

You know, excellent point. I've changed it so it's more like your idea. Also noticed that I put the rear wiper function under the wash-wipe section , so I fixed that too.

The problem, for me anyway, isn't the on/off part, it's not knowing which lever operates what since I don't use the front HVAC system very much. And I'm used to my other two VWs giving me icons that aren't so darn cryptic. However, doing and redoing the note cards, I think I've got it down now. _________________ ~Kamz

it's deeezined by zee engineers so that with all levers to the right and fan on 2 is full defrost..
it must have been a top priority for the Vanagon program after years of Type-2s with poor defog abilities. _________________

^^^ The hard part is the indicators on the dash are very small, the levers get
in the way of seeing them, and the driver needs to keep eyes on the road...
It's also the only dash layout I know of that has four identical, narrow control levers,
stacked within a few mm of each other, and #1 works opposite of #3...

I don't know why people find them so hard to understand..
the long wedge indicates.. more to one side less to the other..
so if you want no airflow then slide them both to less (small side of wedge)
if you want defrost slide that to more.
and if your feet are cold slide that to more also.
I'd like the SA round dials faceplate and controls but they don't seem to get imported like the other SA unique items. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/942633.jpg
I wonder if there's any interest in a machined billet aluminum panel?
I could take with a machinist fella _________________
