Prior to 1985, the EPA estimates were done differently - and the mpg figures were extremely inflated. The air-cooled Vanagons carried a rating of 17 city and 25 highway. Of course we know from experience those vans never got much better than 18 mpg, but anyway, that's what the window sticker said. There was no specific rating for the Westfalia camper.

FWIW, the 83.5 and 84 Wasserboxer carried an even more inflated rating of 19 city and 27 highway. But then in 1985 the same van was rated at 18 city and 20 highway, so the evaluation system changed in 1985. 1986 2.1s were rated at 16 city and 18 highway.

I don't know about the mpg but my first trip in a vanagon was in an 82 aircooled, in 1983 and the first summer vacation for it. I do know that it got about 8000 miles before it dropped an exhaust valve. Sad

So began my love/hate relationship with VW busses.
