|
|
Im getting a weird howl noise from the rear in the car just as I come out of thitd and into 4th but it goes away once I reach 3k rpms..
I know main shaft bearings should make noise the whole time right? I did tighten up my axle nuts on both sides as they were loose. I started hearing this noise after I tightened them. I tightened them to 200lbs so the axle bearings should be fine.. I want to loosen up thr axle bearings but idk? Any ideas .. its a 66 squareback[/i] _________________ Click to view image |

Cant get an accurate recording but I can also heae creaking like a squeaky bed when I roll up to stop signs on the rear passenger side. I just checked to see if the axle nut was too tight and it was actually possible to untighten it by hand. Not sure wth is going on.. _________________ Click to view image |

or a crack in the drum. I had a friend with a squeeky right rear drum. Took me walking next to it while he was coasting to figure out what it was |
Yeah, but he's got discs on the rear. Might be a cracked hub though. Or maybe a stripped nut, since it won't hold torque. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

yeah I tightened it back up and it stopped squeaking all together after I took it on the freeway for 10 mins.. the howling also is not as loud now.. I am so confused.. i've stripped a drum before on my notchback years ago and I could say it might sound similar but not really.. I do have rear discs now so this whole sound is something I never really heard before.. when I rotate the disc on the rear passenger side it rubs the pads like a bent bike wheel.. so drags on about 50% of the rotor then stops dragging.. Feels unbalanced.. really strange stuff.. _________________ Click to view image |

if your hub came loose, the bearing maybe be damaged now. worth having a look
come to think of it, when I was in my teens my 1st type 3 had a squeak and deep whining sound at the rear. the bearing spacers and inner race were smashed despite the hub being tight. I installed new (2nd) bearings and spacers and it was good as gold after.
Also with your disk rubbing only 50% of the way round, something is horrifically wrong there. Should not be any more than 0.05mm runout over the whole disk. Time to disassemble and start checking for bent parts, worn parts or out of tolerance etc... _________________ The best of VW engine development!

so it appears to be a spun rear rotor on the driver side.. i took the rotors off on both sides and the driver side is worn down to little razor blades for splines.. the passenger side is in perfect condition.. looks like i will be replacing that rotor and making sure it can be torqued to spec by keeping an eye on it.
on a positive note i finally raised my back end and evened out the ride height with inner and outer splines.. since I wont be driving her till i replace the rotor i felt i might as well dial in the stance perfectly..
once i replace the rotor and torque it down properly I'll update this thread and see if it fixed the howling noise.. I am also going to see if my tranny fluid it low as i suspect it hasn't been filled or flushed in many many years... _________________ Click to view image |
