I have new carbs and ignition coming to me and i figure while I'm going to be in there working anyway, what are some of the best ways to clean up the engine bay and maybe even make a little extra room in there? Also, if you have pictures of your engine to show for reference i would really appreciate it!

It's pretty hard to make more room with dual carbs.

New tar board is the easiest way to clean it up. You can remove unneeded wiring and hoses.

For oily greasy crud.... GUNK ENGINE BRIGHT... And pressure washer ( of garden hose with good nozzle)...

Final cleanup with soap and water, and good rattle can of paint.... Black hides a lot....

Thanks guys!
So what I've gathered so far is that using a 36hp fan shroud without heater vents frees up some space and also using an electric fuel pump and routing my lines outside the engine bay while mounting my coil where my pump used to be is another option (although I prefer to stick with my mechanical pump if at all possible). Where are a few good places I could put my coil or fuel lines and filters? I've looked up a lot of photos of other people's engine bays but without explanation for where and how some items are located it's somewhat difficult to see the "how".

Get the CB rotary fuel pump and mount it under your vtank with a cut off valve. The pump has a filter in it and yer done. Coil can be mounted on the shroud or on the inner fender with a longer lead wire.Get some of the flexible wire loom and bundle all the wires in it and put it out of the way , making sure all crimped ends are soldered and heat shrink Lots of saved headaches down the road on that one. A clean and tidy engine bay is easy to work/diagnose problems in .

My 1679cc. 36 horse shroud, no heat, coil relocated behind the shroud, electric fuel pump, cross bar painted black to blend in with the shroud, wires tied/clamped to keep them under control, and the tar board replaced.

Less is more. Move the coil, hide the wires, and clean it good. Running an electric pump really cleans up a lot of the clutter too. The smaller center mount linkages seem to hide better than a crossbar too.

You couldn't eat off mine, but it was a nice cleanup for cheap. You also had to drink a beer to have a can to wrap the coil which is always a plus. Wink

I sandblasted everything while the engine was out, then hit it with a quick coat of rattle can primer and then a coat or two of rattle can, bbq high temp flat black..

The Sync Link, plug wire clips, and spiral wrap wire stuff really help keep everything under control and out of the way too..

I really think that the most common denominator here is organization of all wires and hoses. Have stuff clamped or tied so it doesn't flop all over, and give yourself enough extra length to work with. Having wires and hoses pulled tight is terrible, but having a mile of extra length loose is asking to get jammed in linkage, the belt, or melted. You don't need fresh paint to be organized and tidy.

A fresh, clean, organized engine bay
(fresh rebuild....no miles yet....."the engine
photo shoot") for The Samba
always looks great !!!

The hardest part: KEEPING IT CLEAN
(especially a daily driver engine)

IMO, ditching the oem tar board crap and simply painting the bay is the cleanest way to get it done.

I just finished building the complete 2276 longblock with all new case, parts, Mallory ignition, and a new Rancho Pro Comp transaxle. Only has 50 miles and 3 full 1/4 mile passes. Yellow tin was off the old 1835 that was in there.

Tin is painted with cheap Rustolium and a $50 china paint gun. With a toothbrush dipped in different colors of paint you stand back 3'-4' and swing the toothbrush and fling the paint onto the tins.
