Well doing my weekly inspection underneath the bus looking for leaks and the such and I was looking at my fuel line. OMG! The hose was nearly coming a part from the filter and oh what a disaster that would of been! The barb at the end of the filter was being held on by the suction on the pump and just a little by the clamp. Anybody had an issue with this new style hose, Gates 30r14, and what was your solution?

Was the hose clamp just loose? The hose looks like it's still in good shape.

Tighten that thing really good but it seems that the hose is a little to spongy and doesn't really bite down on the hose like the braided stuff VW had produced previously!

Do you have the correct diameter hose?
I have Gates on my bus and everything looks fine after 1.5 years. I just checked everything out this past weekend.

Looks like that clamp might be a little too low also.

I agree. Move the clamp close to the end of the hose. In the position they're at now they are maybe just catching the end of the filter and by tightening the clamp it's pushing the filter out of the fuel line.

And those cheap plastic fuel filters can break pretty easy, We should all have something stronger like a good metal fuel filter housing.
Billet Fuel Filters. Or Glass Case Fuel filter, or Metal fuel filter.

I would suggest investing in a better filter.

Perhaps a Hastings GF-1 filter. Metal with 1/4" on each side. $5.

The plastic inline filters work best with genuine 5mm German fuel hose. Do not overtighten clamps on these plastic filters, it can try to "squirt" the hose off the filter.

I have found new 5mm German braided fuel hose applied with a little carb spray as an installation lubricant sticks very well.

1/4 inch! If I go any smaller it will be tough to install my hose on the carb and fuel pump.

I've seen these filters before and are they reliable and how do they perform with the 1/4 inch hose?

I just found those metal filters in this ad, I don't have any experience with them but they look like they may be the right size. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1304280

I have that napa one on my engine. No problems after the first few thousounds miles. I really don't expect any with a clean tank, new lines and running high test.

Never like the glass filters- couldn't get the tension right for fear of breaking the glass- and they always leaked after a while - those billet ones look good. and have used the plastic ones for years with out a failure -but did change them out before they discolored or got plugged up. Never put clamps on them when using correct fuel line as that always was a crap shoot weather you do more harm than good- (FI is different) .

If that clamp set up had been done correctly- ie- hose on pass the "bump" on the end- and the clamp just starting to deform the rubber hose- I see no reason for a filter to slip the hoses when supported as well as that one. Just saying. Crying or Very sad

That Napa filter is a good one and come with a 90% nipple too.

Nothing wrong with the filter your using (OP). I've been using them for well over 25 years without negative effect. What is wrong are the following:

1. Fuel hose is not on far enough. (Left side in photo).

2. Clamp is to far away from the edge of hose.

PS..it' always a good idea to use a filter between the tank outlet and pump given the crap (sediment) that is likely in the tank after all these years. It also extends the life of any fuel pump you may be running.
