A language problem for me, I guess it's obvious for you.
My dictionnary does not know the word: tranny
Is this the crankcase ?
I understand it has to do with oil ( engine ? transmission ? oil ) .
What is it exactly ? |

In automotive terms it is the transmission or in the VW world short for Transaxle.

Ok tranny= transmission (US) gearbox(UE)
What about "Transaxle" I think it's an "automatic" gearbox, but I am not sure it's always automatic. |

I guess it all comes down to:
Do you have a clutch pedal?
If the anwer is "yes" then you have a manual transimssion or gear box and should use the 80-90 oil to make sure it is full, but never over full. You need a 17 mm hex key to check it.
If the answer is "no" then you have an automatic transmission or gearbox and use Dexron (I think) in the transmission, but I think still the 80-90 oil in the trans-axle. I have never had one, so I wouldn't bet the farm on it. |

Sure I drove cars with 3 pedals and cars with 2 pedals, ( and various cases of 4 wheel drives with more gearboxes and clutches)
In the usual 2 pedals case ( no clutch ),
the transmission has gears ( + small clutches automatically operated ) AND a torque converter.
Is the word Transaxle for:
_automatic transmission.
_torque converter.
_transmission........ ( manual or auto )
_other ( may be about the differential not included in the gear box ) |

Yes it is called Transaxle as it is the type that contains both the gearbox and the final drive gear ring and pinion in one unit.
In the USA...this was once upon a time nearly exclusive to VW's ( I say nearly as there have been less well known or mass produced cars with a trans axle... and all FWD cars fall into this classification??) until the late 60's and thorugh 70's forward when so many Imports/FWD cars came on the scene. |

All right, I now see clearly.
Your quick history of the car's transmissions did help to clear my mind. |
