So I have a new (reproduction) steering wheel/horn button and a new turn signal cancelling ring. I see how they are supposed to attach together using 3 screws, but I can't figure out what that screw size should be. Unfortunately, the steering wheel and the cancelling ring didn't come with these screws. Does anyone know what size screws I need? |
3.5mm fine-pitch thread, maybe 1.00? (that's if I grabbed the right screw)

Whenever I'm turning over the pulley by hand it sticks pretty hard at a certain point in the rotation. Maybe 3/4 of the way to TDC. I can figure out exactly where it is if need be.
Should it be this way?
I'm turning the alternator. Sometimes it slips as well. |
Does the tight spot go away if you remove the plugs?
If not, that doesn't sound good, as there shouldn't be significant binding going on. |
I'm going to be doing a proper tune up today so I'll check with the plugs out when I get around to that. If it's still binding with the plugs out is that going to be a head or piston issue? I think it's leaking oil from the cylinder/head gasket area too. I'm thinking I need to at least redo all the seals from the case out. |

It should feel like compressing a spring, not like hitting a hard obstruction. Yes, it should have enough resistance to make the belt slip sometimes if you're turning the alternator. This "spring" resistance is the compression of air inside the cylinder during the compression stroke. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle |

Okay yeah that feels about right. |

That is an Evaporative Emission Control Canister. The vent from your fuel tank originally fed into this canister. There is activated charcoal inside to capture the fumes. The larger hoses used to work together to force the fumes out of the canister and into the air cleaner once the engine is running. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle |

Or you'd like to try to stop your car always smelling of gas fumes on warm days. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

I tried looking on the interwebs for this part and come up with nothing. The fact my 74' SB has this canister, does that mean it's a California model? It was purchased in Ohio. I am in Virginia, so no crazy emissions laws. How do you even know if you bug is a Cali model? Thanks gang. |

It looks like this thread should answer most of your questions for the evaporative emission system: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=713211&highlight=charcoal+canister
As for Cali/Non-Cali I do not know. Before my time and isn't something I've researched. But the answer likely exists somewhere in these forums! _________________ Two Bugs-

The activated charcoal canister was standard equipment on all Beetles imported into the US from the 1970 model onward, not just those meant for California. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

There is no direct replacement canister available. If you want it to work like new, your only choice is to restore the original. There are threads here somewhere about that process. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle |

One additional answer - i used a donor canister from a modern car. Bought at Autozone, cut open for the donor charcoal. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Okay I do feel this is a dumb question but I'm still new to this and I don't want to ask my dad for help lol. So I have a 1973 Beetle, it's lifted so it can go off roading. My dad just built me a new engine, its a 1641. I wanna make it able to drag race but still street legal and able to go off roading. I don't know if I'm asking to much with that but can someone give me suggestions on what to do to it to make it able to do that? I wanna give it as much speed as possible. Please help! |

I bought a new antenna for my 77 standard. Looking at the new one, I see there seems to be a twist/catch a lip means of securing the new one.
How do I get the old one out? wrench on the nut just below the telescope? Hand tight? |
