They look great to me. Whenever I do a project, there are always little blemishes that only I will ever see. You did a great job.
I tried to look back to see, but did you no longer have originals to use as templates?
I have to recreate a few of my wood panels soon, but I still have the old ones to trace. It looks a lot harder if you're trying to make it from scratch. _________________ ~Kevin

Hi bvolks,
If you start doing your double cab please do post your progress in the forum. It would help other restorers to start or continue with their project. _________________ 1966 Riviera camper Bus

hi Hikelite,
The old wood liner was very brittle, had cracks & was sagging. I don't even know if it is the original one. When I took it off it fell apart. I tried my best to trace a template from what was left of it. I had to throw it because it had rat nest on top of it plus rat poop. The wife wants it out of the garage.

If you think putting a headbanger cabinet back where it was before is fun... you should try installing a home made copy where there wasn't one before.
That piece you want is half of a marine canvas snap. An upholstery shop or marine supply store will have them. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Hi tomWesty
Yes, I am still working on my 71 Westy.
My wife got me a long list of repair projects in & outside the house that tied up my weekends for awhile. I didn't work on installing the interior of the Westy earlier this year because I used the Westy to haul VW parts to 3 VW shows where I sold a good portion of my parts. With most of the major VW shows now done in southern Callfornia I can now concentrate in putting up the interior of my 71 Westy.
I will be working again on my 71 Westy every weekend as long as time and money allows me. I am thinking of getting a part time job on Saturdays so that I can finance this restoration.
I have a restoration "job list" and so I will be finishing up the remaining areas around the front wheel wells. I am also preparing the wood templates for the side walls.
I checked around for the pop-top canvas and they are about $400-$500, which is a bit pricey for me. I have been thinking of making it myself and so I am checking around the fashion district in downtown Los Angeles for fabric, hoping to find one that I can use for the pop-top. (LA fashion district is full of stores that sells all sorts of fabric and clothing at affordable prices). I was told that I cannot use a regular sewing machine because that will easily break the needle due to the thick fabric. I might have to sew by hand. I don't have any experience sewing and so I will have to research on how I will create the pop-top tent.
I took a few pictures of what I was able to work on yesterday and so I will be posting those tomorrow. _________________ 1966 Riviera camper Bus

The canvas on a Westy isn’t that heavy, you should be able to use a regular sewing machine. If you were making them all day long an industrial machine would be good, but you could probably get away with using a consumer model for a one off. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

On the pop top, I think you could definitely do it. You just might be able to go faster if you have a better machine. Just make sure you use the right needle. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

If you are talking about the turn signal indicator light (on the cluster) it is normal that they blink at the same time. If you really want them to blink independently search this forum some have change the wiring diagram to do so. |
It is true to say that the VW-factory-standard circuit for the direction-indicator (i.e. turn-signal in USA parlance) tell-tale lights to flash together for both right-hand and left-hand turns! I modified my early-1973-model-year, VW 1600 Type 2's circuit as follows, so that the single corresponding tell-tale lights flash. In addition to changing the wiring circuit, I also needed to change the tell-tale light bulb holders.

It has been lose to three years since your last post. Are you still working on the Westy? I will need to do quite a bit of what you are doing to my `72 Westy. _________________ Brad Spear
