They say there's no such thing as a dumb question, but I found one. The washer that comes in the clutch cable kits, is it for shimming the bowden tube? At first I thought it went between the wing nut and the clutch lever, but that doesn't really make sense. Thanks. _________________ - 1977 CEI Sunroof Bus 2.0L F.I. Hydraulic Lifters

That must be something new, I've never gotten bonus parts in a clutch cable bag. Where did you get it? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

My clutch cable bags only had the clutch cables in them also. But I've never heard of a clutch cable kit.
As far as what to do with the mystery washer just do it all just like your service manual tells and shows. _________________ 71 Superbug

You can certainly buy a clutch cable kit.

Not sure what the washer is for, but it being a shim for the bowden tube seems reasonable. |

That looks nice. I'd definitely get that if I wasn't sure of all the components on my bus.
Just a note- some non-Gemo cables on the market right now are lacking the 8" plastic sleeve that prevents chafing on the frame. Don't buy them, it only encourages the manufacturers and retailers. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

Because a washer (or spacer) came in the kit doesn't mean that it should be used. Set up the bowden tube sag adjustment per the dimension and instructions in your service manual. Then after it's running it may or may not need further sag adjustment depending on how it performs. _________________ 71 Superbug

Wildthings, that is the kit I have. Just wanted to be certain the washer does not go behind the wing nut? That was my first thought, but then realized that it would completely defeat the purpose of the wing nut having a convex surface on the bottom. _________________ - 1977 CEI Sunroof Bus 2.0L F.I. The wing nut is not only roundish in shape, but has barbs that prevent it from turning on its own in the release arm. If you used a washer under it it would quickly back itself off. |

Best guess would be they've included the extra item due to the many people that ended up realizing the cable was to long. Rather than sending it back. _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc

Hello
Sure enough, there is a washer in the kit.
Is it #4. Does it fit on the Bowden tube?
The drawing depicts the washer hole being the size of the cable. But the description says it is 12.2 x 22.
Here is a 12mm circle for reference.

What size is your washer? It would be helpful to know for those in the future looking for a kit with a correct sag-washer. I put on a new bowden tube today and it used a different amount of washers to get the correct sag.
For what it's worth, my OG ones measured really close to a half inch ID, and .8" ID. About 1/10th of an inch thick. Now off to get that micrometer in metric _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!
