Hi,

In a 1963 split bus, should the gear shift rod guide bracket - the one that sits under the shifter with the plastic bush in. when you unbolt the shifter, should it dangle loose or should it be attached/fixed/welded to the body?

Mine is loose which makes it difficult to adjust the shifter, as when you move the shifter base, the guide bracket also moves aswell!

Thanks, Mike

The shifter is bolted to the bracket, so when you loosen the bolts, both parts move. Note the nuts on the bottom side of the bracket. What you have, based upon your description, is normal

Great - thanks. I just thought it was strange - i.e in a beetle, the bracket is fixed to the tunnel, so if you move the base of the shifter, then it increases/decrease the throw of the shaft.

With the bracket not fixed, then when you move the base of the shifter, then the bracket moves aswell, which means the throw doesn`t change (side to side anyway).

cheers

Yes, it's loose.

When I adjust the shifter I usually do it when the shifter is just a little loose.
I've never looked underneath to see if the bracket is moving too - I guess it might be.
