I know this doesn't count for the challenge, and I took it last week anyway. So this just serves as a bump and because I thought it was neat pic.

Thanks! I was able to help out with the field burning at a local church/foster teen camp. Around my part of Kansas, it is very common to see fields being burned for a few weeks this time of year. Burning gets rid of the old dead grass as well as some weeds and invasive species of trees. That clears the way for the fresh grass and adds nutrients back into the soil in the ash. The blackened surface also warms faster, which helps the new grass grow. In a couple weeks, the burned fields are a beautiful neon green with the fresh grass!

Thanks!

It is actually a bow rake. To get the fires going, you find a nice little patch of dry grass and start the fire in it. (All you really need is a regular old match.)

Then you wait a few moments for it to start up. Grab some more dead grass in the rake, and get that going. Then you can take your flaming "hell rake" (as I called it in my mind) and just start dragging it along the edge of where you want to burn to drag the fire along and start the line.

That area we were burning when I took the pic, was probably a half-mile long. So we did several "leap frogs" of fire lines, starting one (with two of us working each direction from the initial patch) then driving down a ways to start the next. The fire lines eventually joined each other, and worked their way up and over the hill.

There are fancy rakes sold just for starting these fires, but the bow rake works just fine.

In dry Florida winters, we're not even allowed to burn microwave popcorn. Laughing

We had a ton of wild fires near us last year. They do controlled burns to limit the potential fires from lightning strikes. Wildfires are bad news!!!

I love the look of "ta da!" on your passenger's face as she gleams victoriously in front of the scene of such horrific family tragedy... Laughing

I know that wasn't intentional. Smile
