Thanks! I notice that you are running press bumpers, would that be correct for my bus? |

No, pressed bumpers ended with the '58 year model but these came with my bus when I bought it 3 years ago (they're Gerson metal repops), so I'm running with them. My M code states the usual USA spec round bumpers with over riders. _________________ My brother & I on the roof of Dad's Splitty circa 1967 - I'm the half pint with the skinny legs! |

.... since your bus is so close in manufacturing date to mine I was wondering which Tail lights I Should have? I believe the change happened in 58 from single to double filament. But I also noticed the holes to mount them are different? one is a circle with a chanel on top and bottom, and the other style has the hole for the tail light and two screw holes to mount it. My tail light area has been hacked for bigger tail lights and I want to bring it back to stock. which would it have had? |
Hey Zac, I just checked my Bentley. It says twin filament bulbs were introduced from April '57. But actually, it just occurred to me that the single bulb is a combined tail light and stop light, so of course it has to be twin filament.....
The measurements given for centering the 'high' tail lights are 345mm vertically up from bottom of quarter panel and 276.5mm horizontally in from the side of the bus. This is a full 100mm higher up than later buses and 11.5mm closer towards the engine compartment. I hope that helps.
Mate, it's worth investing in the Bentley especially since you are keen to keep the bus as stock as possible. It's full title is "Workshop Manual Volkswagen Transporter 1950-1962" by Bentley Publishers. _________________ My brother & I on the roof of Dad's Splitty circa 1967 - I'm the half pint with the skinny legs! |

Well it's been a while since I have given an update, so here we go:
I have bit bumpers and all major body components, shaped the trans, ordered a brand new 1600 from Chico performance in Arcadia, new gas tank petcock, etc. brakes all the way around, bearings as well. Just trying to make it safe and reliable.
Drove her to meet in the middle, near solving this weekend. Which is my buses longest trip to date. Almost 500 miles. |

Yeah everyone kept telling me to get one! I actually didn't have time! I was having problems with my new petcock leaking like crazy. I went down and tried to tighten it and missed it with my wrench and accidentally hit the starter. All of the sudden my hand and the bus were on fire. Luckily my buddy had his fire extinguisher and my bus saw no harm whatsoever. Scared the crap out of me and burnt my hand a little. Lesson learned disconnect the battery no matter what and always keep an extinguisher handy! |

My man, I am fairly confident that this book...
has a vintage article in it featuring a high tail light panel camper from back in the day...early (pre '64) panel conversion campers are actually quite rare, it was the beginning of the camper era and there weren't as many companies doing it as opposed to '65-'67... _________________ 1960 L31 M183 kombi |
