I'm not a gear head, so I'm way out of my league with you guys. I just brought home my engine from my 64 deluxe yesterday. Just based on these few pictures, does this look like an original engine? My father in-law and I will strip it down to the long block and take it to be rebuilt. I'm assuming its a 1500cc 6 volt engine, but will know when it's sent for the rebuild.
Thanks, Brian

I think those intakes are vertical which would be a 40 horse. Also a big cap distributor that would imply 40?
Engine number 5 723 058 is March/April 1961. _________________ Larry in OB

Thanks, 1961? So my engine is even earlier then my bus. Is that uncommon?
Chassis number is 1167148, which I believe was built in August of 63, but is a early 64 model. |

Your engine is an earlier model than 1964. That said, you might have an original 1961 there. The carburetor is a 28 PICT original to1961. It was likely a beetle engine not bus. It does not have the short bus intake manifold or speed governor installed. The voltage regulator atop the generator indicates 6 volt. If you are going for an original 1964 engine you have A LOT of parts hunting to do. _________________ Roads Scholar &

Another look tells me the following:
The coil does not appear to be Bosch or Garbe-Lahmeyer make= not original
The fuel pump looks odd, Porsche?
The fan shroud is definitely not correct for 1961, as they were stale air without the fresh air horns. It would be correct for 1964 though- sadly tis trashed from the coil mounts being torn out. . Your thermostat assembly appears to still be in place on the front of the fan shroud- that's good and kinda rare. _________________ Roads Scholar &

Thanks man! Appreciate the information. Will keep the forum posted on the final outcome. Keeping my fingers crossed this doesn't get out of hand |

Better off selling or trading that off for a proper 1500 or if not worried about total restoration a 1971 or later 1600 is much better case for a bus.
Gen stand is 1959 thru sometime in 1961 without the later cast in reinforcements. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

We might in fact be selling it and starting over. The process starts next week |

I don't believe that fan shroid is original to a '61 40hp. The nipple sticking up on the PS is a dead giveaway that it is later. But, those stamps on the backside are pretty cool. The generator stand is also unusual. And the distributor. And the fuel pump. You could probably part it out for more than its worth as a complete core. Of course, your main market would be motor geeks, like me .

Plus it has flap vanes instead of venturi control ring. |
