Hey folks,
1972 bay window stock-ish IV motor
Having trouble starting. Runs great. When I turn it off for a second I get nothing from the starter... Doesn't turn over at all.
Starts up immediately the second I jump it with another car.
Replaced red line from battery to starter 4 years ago with bus depot wire
Replaced battery yesterday
No change.
Any thoughts on where to start ? |

Start with a volt meter to determine if the running voltage is more than the sitting parked voltage, after that have a good look at the battery terminal clamps, if they are dirty where they contact the post you'll get a no crank even if the battery is new but clamping the booster cables to the clean outsides of the terminals will make everything suddenly work. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
Please don't PM technical questions, ask your problem in public so everyone can play along. If you think it's too stupid post it here

Enhance the voltage paths to the starter. You have a fresh battery, make the ground strap to the body shiny clean, then make the ground path from the body of the car to the transaxle shiny clean, and if the starter mounting flange is dirty/oily, make it clean (requires removal of starter from bell housing. Then make sure that all terminals on starter solenoid are shiny clean, especially the ring terminal end that leads to the front of the car and the push on spade terminal from the ignition switch (red/black if stock wiring).
If this does not make the starter turn over the engine wonderfully, it is possible that your solenoid/starter is becoming weak and drawing down the battery voltage.
