This job won't be the winner, but it's got to be up there!
After 14yrs with us we decided to treat our Kombi to new curtains. We'll miss the old ones...

The old ones were getting pretty frayed, faded, thin and patched, and wouldn't meet where they were supposed to. Compromised privacy (and decency) at times! Embarassed

Managed to source some genuine '70's material, in a range of sizes, and had a new set made up, with similar Silent Gliss' loop tape as a header.

Only problem is, every one of the tiny 'eared' hanging tabs has to be squeezed and threaded onto the loop tape...

I've given up for tonight, about 1/3 of the way through, but need to get them finished and hung before we go camping in 2 weeks!
Patience, grasshopper!

The most tedious job I can think of off hand is changing out the alternator on a Type 4 engine. Makes me appreciate a Type 1 generator arrangement.

Cleaning 30 some odd years of crud off the engine tin and welding up all the stress cracks.

Those are the curtain gliders where each one gets sewn to the curtain. But I don't understand the "squeezed and threaded onto the loop tape" part. We've just sewn then on like the originals were. The groove all the way around is to hold the thread. Westy originally used real heavy thread (almost string) and tied with knots like in Bigbores pic.

Here were Bigbores curtains and sliders
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5481219&highlight=curtain+clips#5481219

And my new curtains with gliders are in here. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5...mp;start=0

They are a tedious task to do. But it was one of the more relaxing tasks when considering some of the rough ones.
Funny how some tough jobs go quick and easy while some apparently simple ones take forever and are the killers.

Desertbusman, the Kombi is a mixture of camper conversions, Dormobile top, Australian cooker, and the curtains did originally have the 'stringy' cotton header tape like Bigbore

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The string had worked loose though, hanging down, and coming out if the sliders at the end and wasn't cleanly repairable. The replacement tape we got when we ordered 'Silent Gliss' loop tape is synthetic, and the sliders need to worm their way under a band of narrow tape within the header tape. Not much slack though, hence the tediousness!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Does seem to be held tight though, and I like the way our old curtains were held neatly against the track, sliders every 2-3" or so, not like this...

Although the ones above ARE neat and tidy, no offence intended! Wink

C/V joint service and/or maintenance, especially dealing with joint failure on the side of the road at night.

Agree with the CV's. Did a repack on mine recently...

Not looking forward to the rear wheel bearings I need to get figured out in my '71 Deluxe...

Strong candidate there; I try to block out how hard those were to do.

How about adjusting the rear torsion. That's an all day affair and if you don't get both sides the same you gotta do it again. Luckily I didn't have to.

I really enjoy CVs and rear wheel bearings, but for some reason I'm dreading cleaning my battery terminals next week… Confused

The scrapers were pretty bad, if I didn't care about my paint it would have been a lot easier.

I guess I've always done it with the engine out so access is easy. Not this time…

CV joints are up there for sure, but the most tedious job I did was degreasing every nut, bolt and square mm of my engine during the rebuild. I loved the entire rebuild process, except the cleaning. Took for ever and was a real mess. Shocked

Another +1 for CV's.

I've got to admit also loathing doing rear brake adjustments - they seem to come round far too often, but not often enough for me to remember which way to turn the stars without ballsing it up at least twice, having to take the wheel etc. off to make sure its even before starting all over again. Due again this weekend...!

Colin had a great way to remember which way to turn them...

Bus CVs are not nearly as bad when compared to FWD CV grenade on the roadside. At least its easy access and no 150lb/ft nut.

Installing the dash can make you look like a cutter, which is an annoying look if you're not.
