The tranny that was in my 83 1/2 POS had pinion problems when I bought it. I drove it somewhere around 30,000 miles without issue before I decided I had pushed my luck far enough and replaced it with a good used box. I did inspect the ring gear when I pulled the tranny and it looked pretty sad and could not have been reused.
