After so long i guess the few people following this thought i had given up, but no, its still moving forward.
Primed flatted and ready for colour, which will start later today in my home rigged cave/booth.
More later. |
It's getting closer. Looking good too. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Well, two days later the shell is finally in colour, Perlweiss.
I used the method i have used previously, i know its old school but its what i know, 4 good coats of cellulose. Will start colour sanding and polishing next week.
I am resonably pleased with the gun finish and i even managed not to produce any runs.
Started on the panels today too, but its started raining so i gave up and had some well deserved beers.
Thanks for the encouragement and for looking. |

Not a huge amount of progress to report but thought i would drag this thread back up.
After painting the shell, not had too much time in the cave, but i have managed to flat and polish the shell in between working on the badly dented passenger door.
Some pix for proof
Couldnt help but start re installing some bits
Couple of questions for the experts on here, Oil filler on the rear panel, should it be silver or black on a 63?, likewise should the bumper brackets be silver or black on a 63?. Mine are all silver so i am presuming thats correct.
Thats all for now. |

Silver, thats what i thought, thanks for that.
Bit more progress, as the weather is too cold/wet/windy or all three, i cant really do any topcoat painting of the fenders as yet, so decided to carry on with the shell rebuild, first stop headlining. i bought a TMI headliner kit a couple of years back so nows the time to open the box.
Appears to be ok, however the original was more of a grey colour, but the off white will be fine as its not a full concourse type build.
This is my 4th headliner install so i have a little experience but its still me doing it so no pros involved. Its really about taking your time i guess and being careful with the glue application and cutting.
Main part installed ok, a couple small wrinkles but i can fix those with the heatgun.
I then moved onto the A posts, had to check if the material i had cut, was long enough by a quick slotting in of the crack free dash.
Nice!
Onto the rest now, more later. Cheers |

Nice work. Looks good. But, I have to ask if it's the camera angle or are the "A" posts concave? Just asking, as the photos look like they are. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

funny thing when you look at the headliner color, it looks white until you put it next to a white background. I used the paint I had mixed to match the headliner hinge cover on my garage door, just to use up some of the quart i had to get mixed. I went in the house and looked out at the garage door and it had a grey brown tinge to it compared to the white and grey on the garage siding.
it's coming along nicely _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Well another post already, whizzing along with this now, headliner all done, window install now. Having spent hours reading all the related threads on here i think i am ready, i have some previous experience with bug screens so think i know what to do.
All ready to start pulling.
Thats an ISP rear seal with molded corners, and the original wide early trim and glass.
Done,
Third attempt appears to be successful. Be a while before it sees rain so wont be able to report on the weatherproofness just yet.
My comments for future info
The seal was nice and soft but the trim groove appeared really wide, however once installed its tightened up and feels secure. I didnt use any weatherproof adhesive goop, just some silicon spray on the frame groove.
Just a shame that the original style of seal isnt currently made, as it has an additional ridge where the trim actually sits against, which makes it look slightly cleaner but this will have to do.
Onto the front now. |

And another post.
Front screen
Done.
More ISP "molded corners" rubber with original fat trim and glass.
Same details as the rear only "popped" in first time.
Thats it for tonight, bedtime!

I think it's easier to get the dash in without the windshield glass with those little screws by the window I guess i'll find our when I have to change my dash next spring. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Well sure it is. But not to difficult when its in either I dont think. If I can get my meat hooks in there then most people should be just fine
260KMN dont forget to paint around the fresh air and heat vents close to the windshield - black. As VW did. Or you will see white looking in from outside. _________________

WOW, your seal and trim install looks great. I like how the trim actually fits, compared to others I've seen. I don't know if it's because of the "wide" early trim, or if it's because you used OE trim. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
