This is what i really like about this forum, the enthusiasm about our hobby.
To receive comments on my boring thread from thesamba superstars, who have been on here for ever, fills me with pride that i am actually perpetuating, in the right direction, our hobby, because lets face it, it is for most people just that. Just need Tram to comment now and i can retire!.
Anyhow, W1k1 yes it was a toss up between window first or dash first, my thoughts were dont damage my lovely dash, so screws can be installed later.
Notchboy, wow i bow down to royalty, yes i already painted the black bits, thanks.
Bobnotch, thanks for your continued support, yes i am really pleased how the seal/trim turned out, as i said its just a shame we cant get the correct profile on the rubbers, but it looks ok.
Heres a few close ups, yes there are gaps but i can live with them and the trim is scratched but hey its 54 years old.
Once again thanks for all your support it means something.
Cheers, off to the pub now! |

Thanks for the encouragement guys.
Latest boring update, with the weather being too wet/cold to spray some white on the remaining panels i have moved onto the undercarriage, plus a house move is looking likely this year so i need to get this thing mobile.
de greased, stripped, reassembled, painted and reinstalled the transaxle and some shiny new parts.
Then its onto the front end.
Stripped and degreased the beam, its got some surface rust and one hole, which is easily repaired.
The beam also needs one of the lower needle bearings replaced as it has obvioulsy been full of water at some time. Other than that and the seals needing replacing its in pretty good shape.
Now some info required from the experts please.
1. Whats the Torque figure for the ball joints big 30mm nuts.
2. I will be replacing the thrust rings and seals on the ARB (upper beam) so it will be back to original specs, how do you set the end play on this as there is a bolt and lock nut on one end which i guess is for adjustment setting. Help here would be appreciated.
Thats all for now, thanks for looking. |

80 ft lbs on the big ball joint nuts.
Yes, you use the bolt with lock plate on the end. Get it as tight as you can at this time, but don't lock it. Once it's back on all 4 tires (tyres) you bounce the front of the car a few times, then tighten it again, now you can lock it in place. But, while you have it apart, check the left end of the bar itself. Note, you might have to do this again in a couple of months of driving, until it finally re-sets itself and stays in adjustment. I've found if they've been neglected for a while, you have to do multiple adjustments to get it in the right place setting. But once there, you only need a slight adjustment once a year if that.
Look at the dimple specifically, as they can and do wobble out when it wears. The fix is to flip it over and drill a new dimple into the bar.
I hope this helps.
P.S. The rear sub is looking real good. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks as ever for the encouragement, heres what i have been doing this month.
Front beam stuff mainly, cleaning derusting welding painting replacing, the usual stuff really.
First off remove rusty lower needle bearing
Rusty old german V Shiny new Brazilian. Same manufacturer though
Installed easily enough
Anti roll bar (sway bar to some) bush/ring things
NOS v old 90k + miles, a fair bit of wear has taken place over 50 years
and finally installed with NOS seals, i also have NOS lower seals and bump stops and ball joints to install too.
next is installation of the beam, more later. |

Looks great. Still have all bearing (NOS) in a box for the emergency case..
Didi you changed both bearing (inner & outer) ? And different diameter ?
After year of usage.. the diameter should be different; that's why there are different sizes are existing. |

Hi Nikon user, i only changed the one needle bearing and the two ARB bushes. there was minimal marking on any of the trailing arms.
As the weather is still not dry/warm enough to paint my fenders and doors i have been slowly doing other stuff.
After refinishing the front beam i rebuild the steering box with one of Oktims kits and installed it with new trackrod ends, then rebuilt the front brakes with rebuilt cylinders using new pistons and seals. Copper brake pipes and reshod shoes.
Then it was onto wiring reinstall and repair.
i picked up a spare early column a few years back which was in far better shape than the original, so i rebuilt one from the two and installed it all.
Then onto the rest of the wiring which again is in great shape.
Re installed the under rear seat stuff and finally the dash, oh and rebuilt the pedal assy.
Thats it for now, although i have started to strip the motor down, now i have some room in the garage. its seized solid so am expecting a rod bearing has run. Will find out in the next installment.
Later guys. |

Nice work, again, as always. Nice to see it all coming together.
Where did you find the 6 volt battery? What brand is it? _________________ Air does not freeze. Air does not boil.

Those batteries are reasonably easy to find here in the UK, i got mine from here
https://www.tayna.co.uk i think its a shield brand, never heard of them but has a 2 year warranty so hopefullymy car will be finished by then. i would imagine shipping to canada would be a tad expensive however. |

Very nice work. Way to go on keeping the project moving forward.
That front beam assembly turned out great. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Well, managed to get the motor dismantled before my latest work expedition, its obviously never been apart before.
its in reasonable shape, couple of oddities with it compares to later 15/1600 crankcases i have not seen before, namely small hole under the breather vent and no cam bearings. Obviously vw hadnt decided to use them yet.
Anyway some pix, plus i found out why it was seized, not a bearing as suspected, but corrosion of piston/cylinder, so bad i had to get the grinder on it to get the thing apart. Which means the case and crank are hopefully reuseable with some work.
small round hole
original foam still in place on oil cooler.
Away in Ireland for the week but will be back onto the cleaning and checking next week.
Cheers |

Nice "cut away" piston and cylinder combo. Strange it had flat top pistons, but then that might be how the earlies were done back then. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
