I just got a full CV joint replacement kit from Van Cafe (in two days, for the price of 4 Lobro CV joints but with all the boots, bolts, grease and C-clips) and there are a bunch of cupped washers with the hardware.
Does anybody know where they go? I have a few axles here and none of them appear to have these little guys. I would be finishing off the axles right now if I knew where they went.
Anybody? _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

Note: some older CVs have a dish washer that goes on the axle before the joint. In my experience, I have yet to install a CV that used this washer-if I use it, the CV won't go on far enough. If your CV calls for that washer, use it. |
they go in the recycling. or perhaps fashion some nice earrings? _________________ 84 Vanagon Westy, 1.9L, California raised but defected to Canada. |

that is, unless these are the cv bolt washers - ridged things - which you definitely want to replace.
perhaps you should post a pic. _________________ 84 Vanagon Westy, 1.9L, California raised but defected to Canada. |

Trash. Those are for bay window busses, we use the same CVs but not that hardware. |

They got deleted on Bay window buses decades ago. Why do companies supply the large cupped washer that isn't needed and not supply the washers for the bolt heads that are needed. |

Interestingly, my CV joint that I took apart last week did have a cupped washer up against the inner stop of the spline, but the RMW CV boot kit did not include the washer. I left it on, presuming it had a purpose. There is certainly enough space between the c-clip and the axle stop for the inner race and the washer. _________________ She's built like a steakhouse, but she handles like a bistro! |

The washers I have were bigger inside than the O.D. of the axle shaft and just slid around on it.
I have 5 of these washers if anybody has a need? _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

I have not reinstalled one of these in so long I can't remember how they once fit. I don't know why they were deleted, but have guessed that since they made it harder to get the snap ring fully seated a lot of people may have had problems with the snap ring coming off allowing the CV joint to work its way off the end of the axle when at full extension.

Two in the nose and one in each ear, what would one do with the fifth?

Some cv styles required the cupped washers, others do not. It appears that most vanagons do not require them. The cupped washers are to prevent the back and forth movement on the splines of the joint on the shaft. By using the washers with spring tension the joint is held in place the joint spring clip or Circlip. Some joint axle combinations do not allow use of the washer.
Them Lobros are high quality joints. Best buy for the long term. _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information
