Working on my Thing today in preparation for the trip to Branson in July. Did a 4 hour trip last Friday as a test drive. It was running a little hot - enough to make the "save my bug" sensor trigger the oil light to start flashing on and off.
So I plan to do a complete tune up , check timing etc. Started
by pulling the plugs this morning- they're about a year and less than 3000 miles old. They look fouled to me - what is your read? (forgot to rotate the photo - but cyl#1 is top left)

You need to take a picture looking more directly at the end of the plugs. Kind of hard to see anything but dark shadows in what you posted. Also use a darker back ground so the camera doesn't darken the picture as much.
Head temperature and oil temperature are not real related. What weight oil are you running? Try a 5w30, 10w30, 5w40, 10w40 oil preferably a "high mileage" synthetic. A straight weight 30wt would also be acceptable. |

here is a better shot.
I'm using 10W30 oil. running a 34PICT3 Bocar and a Brazilian case of unknown displacement. Am about to check timing...

That's what I was thinking too. Will make a small adjustment.
I dialed back the timing a couple of degrees just to see if the engine might run a little cooler. FYI - it's got a 009 distributor on it.
Also found right rear brakes were too tight and adjusted those. Will go for another test drive tomorrow.
Thanks for your input, gentlemen! _________________ 1963 Beetle

At 3000 miles, those plugs look fine to me. You might be running a tiny bit rich, but not enough, IMO, for concern.
I'd check the valves and timing, put in some fresh plugs, and continue driving the car. |
