Gents,

Some fantastic info has been given freely here and for that I'm very grateful to all.

At no point do I want this thread to turn into a hunt for buses that may or not be there, we all know they are still out there, we all know people are prepared to spend huge sums of coin hunting them down, extracting them for all manners of places and then restoring them ...there are threads on here for that.

I'm interested in the history of the buses that came here and hopefully get people to share that info, if possible can we stay on topic and encourage those with info on these buses to share it freely. I'm happy to take PM's and share my email address if people have historic info / photo's etc that they'd not like to share on a public forum.

Ian

Nothing useful to add "rockstock"?

Ian, I am going to be starting on my single cab next month, I would be happy to take photos of differences as I see them, glass, vinyl, paint etc as I go. This thread could be a really useful resource for anyone with an Aus or NZ bdoor, would be nice to see it kept that way. I also have few of the water slide dash transfers from some of the original dealers that I can add, I don't have any from "Jowet motors" though unfortunately…

"Tedz. (20-106513)" Maybe you have some photos/ info to add since your bus is an NZ assembled one?

If some of these buses were delivered as completely disassambled kits, do you have any information how they were assembled ? would this have been a small factory with a line or do you think theY were just a garage, with few men. like with British bikes that arrived in a wooden crate and would need the handlebars and lights added?

that sounds crazy ! Shocked haven't heard about anything Wolfsburg built like that. that it would carry thh C ompletely K nocked D own short also in the body nr ! so this probably means it is the 268th body delivered as a knocked down version (worldwide probably, not NZ only). sounds as if they would've stamped it like that in Germany.
sounds logical that Ian's door top numbers are not alike. they probably took the doors of the CKD stash they got shipped.

The info I have is that mine came over fully assembled, the door top numbers are only a couple of digits EG 123 and I have 125, I dont have CKD stamped into the body anywhere either, my speedo is stamped 3/55 also.

I'm going to get in touch today with the previous owner and see if he has any info of the guy he bought it from, maybe go from there and track down as much history as possible.

I have posted a picture of the 268 CKD writing on the barn door gallery section. It looks to be written in chalk or crayon

Simon,

Just had a look at the pictures ( being honest it';s the 1st time I've ever looked in the gallery )

Man that is one hell of an effort with this SC, hats off to you Sir, top job.

Very interested to know how you tackled the front and rear ends regarding running gear and lowering.

Again well done, I do love the single cabs, we have a May 55 SC so not quite BD.

why are the letters rusted so much ? do you think the crayon was on the bare metal from shipping, so the primer and later paint would not stick properly to the metal where the crayon was ? interesting detail.
Would they ship the CKD units in bare metal ? Shocked must have rusted badly in the month of overseas shipping. primer on the ckd panels would have been bad for spot welding then. I read that NZ Oval era beetles had different paint codes from Wolfsburg stock. so does the NZ BD blue match dove blue ?

Some great questions...the one that really interests me is about your reference to Dove blue.

Are there any more original paint Dove blue NZ BD buses out there ??

Is mine the only 1 left ? I truly hope not !

There is a really good ex NZ og paint single cab in Australia , maybe a couple left here. There is also the oddball NZ bdoor green, I will take a pic of this tomorrow for you, if I get the chance. Not sure re: the bdoors, but Ive seen other og paint NZ assembled ribbed bumper buses, that had black cab door frames, all white pressed bumpers, and white hubcaps.

To answer "djfordmanjack's" question… it does look like the grease pen on Simons bulkhead with the ckd lettering has worn off allowing the panel to rust, which possibly does suggest the panels were shipped here unpainted. the cars were fully assembled here in jigs, from german panels, interesting question re the primer? photos in the assembly book look like bare metal?

I dont have my copy of the book here but from what I recall, there were two factories here, the first a smaller assembly plant on K road Auckland? were they had previously made other makes, Jowett, Bradford etc the second was purpose built at Otahuhu sth Auckland. 1203 vehicles were assembled in the first year incl 500 or so bdoors so Simons bus could easily be the 268 th ckd bus or VW. Production did not begin at the start of the year, so it would obviously have increased from the initial 1200 units the following year. I wonder when the last bdoor assembled here was? when the last of the parts was used up?

please share the pics of the original assembly book, when you find them! Would be very interesting how they built them in NZ in comparison to Germany. are there any workers living to tell the story ?
