Got some 195/55-16 tires mounted to my rims. I pre-adjusted the front end and it all looks very promising now. I had to reduce the travel of the steering rack by turning a thick washer from tool steel. It sits between the counter nut and the tie rod rack ends.

The rear isn`t as simple. In hindsight I am not sure, if it was clever to use the narrowed rear trailing arms with the tires I am using. I choose ET 42 to be able to drive the different 17 inch wheels that are on the market also and (more important) to get good suspension geometry in the front.

However, I had to space the hubs so far outboard again, to make the tires not rub, that I am back to where an original width IRS trailing arm would have been. At least per my calculations Rolling Eyes I am not so happy with it and will have to see with the body on, if my calculations are maybe off or if I really wasted all this effort using narrow arms. Its getting cold in the garage Laughing

But I got the suspension pre adjusted to mesured the correct lengths for the new SAW axles. I bought the shortest ones I could find but still had shorten them.

Good work Lars, I like that tool to adjust the rear suspension.
Bummer about the rear wheel offset, I hope it works out.
For the stops on the steering rack, I made mine out of Delrin to avoid the metallic clack when you hit the stops, might be something to think about on a street car.
On the other hand I don't know whether my Delrin ones will last? so maybe steel is better?
anyway keep posting for us to enjoy

Hi Ian, Thanks!

The Golf uses the threaded rod end cups as a stop. They are steel, so I think the steel washer will work just fine. I don't think I will reach the hard stops often in street driving.

For the offset I have to get the body mounted to see the truth.

Lots of mesuring today and good news.

The new rear end is only 6 mm per side wider, compared to the original narrow axles in the KG. This gets me 30 mm narrower per side than the VW IRS axle, both including CSP disc brakes. I am happy, this is exactly what I wanted to achieve Very Happy

I could not resist and had to fake a new wheels under the KG today Twisted Evil

I really like those wheels Cool

I made a simillar set for my bug some years ago but I had some difficulties in finding suitable barrels for the OG 16" centers. I finally took 6,5" from Chrysler with 175/50 for the fronts and a 7" Repro with 195/55 for the rears.

Which barrels have been used for those?

Realy nice bug! Different and great looking!

I also had difficulties finding barrels and finally asked a company specializing in rims for help. Supposingly they are from some french car. Even on those they had to make a thin spacer to fit the center hub.

What spacing did you make yours? I picked ET42 for the "perfect" steering geometry and to be able to fit the aftermarket 17" wheels as well.

The fronts were 6,5 x 16 - ET35 and the rears 7,0 x 16 ET 25.

I first wanted to add some more ET but it was not possible with the barrels. Too close for the welding. ET35 was the maximum. In my mind 16" is the perfect size - 17" sometimes appears a little too big in the front.

I think yours are perfect for the Ghia.

Totally agree, 17" smoothies are way cool, but are just a little too much for what I am trying to achieve. The ET42 will also help that sleeper look Twisted Evil

Did you weld yours yourself? I had mine done by DS.

Yes I have welded mine by myself but I CNC machined them for better balancing.

So basically the centers have been milled according to the area direct below the horn. The Result was quite good. Those wheels almost needed 10-25g per side.

Thank you, but credit for the heads goes to Thorsten Pieper.

I am still looking for a place to have them plated. Seems like no original Mahle Nikasil is available anymore. Rimotu in Germany had a license but seems to be out of business Crying or Very sad

Hi Ian, thank you for the contacts, but indeed to far.

There are places to have them plated in Germany. But I was referring to the genuine Mahle Nikasil process. That is protected with licensing and the only place I know who had one is not available anymore. The similar aftermarket Nicasil is available, no problem...

What is with the cylinder heads? They almost like like 356/912 heads. What features does the design incorporate?

These are CNC billet heads for oxyboxer with 100mm and larger bore. Plenty of cooling surface. They use S/F manifolds and Type 1 exhaust. Dual spark plugs are standard and I choose 48x39 valves. Mine flow about 240 cfm, probably more possible, but mine are rather ported for good low and mid range . Made by TP-Technologie in Germany.
