That is great work there. A lot of hose connections . Do you have a pressure tester for hoses? Is there a little tank for the gearbox oiling system, or does it just recirculate?
As well as being functional it looks great! WELL DONE |

By the way: This one of the craziest Ghia builds here. I am really I'm really impressed and excited about the final result!
Can you explain why its necessary to have this oiling system? That would be very interesting to me.

Question: can someone here share pictures and/or explain how exactly VW build the isolated contact ring onto the steering shaft?
I'm working on my steering column and need to add a feature to get current isolated onto a cable leading to the horn button. The steering column assembly will ground the power. Similar to the pre 58? VW's. The contact brush is clear to me but I like to know how VW assembled the isolated ring onto the shaft to maybe copy it.

Here is my Frankenstein steering column (SC)
SC tube, and turn signal switch from my 65 Ghia
SC shaft from an early super beetle, so that the old steering wheels fit. Cut in half to adjust the length.
Shoulder machined to fit two ball bearings onto the shaft.
Standard industrial ball bearings installed on VW spacer. I used two bearing because they are pretty small to fit into the old SC tube.
Adapter fits into SC tube and holds the bearing in place.
Completed with a custom plastic spacer just like VW did on super beetles. This set up gives me exact 2mm (VW spec) clearance between turn signal and steering wheel.
Lower end: Standard industrial needle bearing with adapter into SC tube, original race and a proper seal to keep water and debris out.
To run the current from the horn relay to the horn button I choose the principle and a carbon brush from pre 58 VWs.
The steel nut will be soldered to the SC tube. Threaded tube is made from plastic to isolate and brass cap leads the current from the inside to the connector. Cap will be painted black on the outside to isolate and so it looks better.
Again pre 58 principle with insulator plastic ring and brass race, including connector. Wire will be run through the shaft to the horn button. The column will be grounded so the current will find the battery
