To be fair, I just bought a '73, and I knew the door handle was a little different than my '78. The bus is still in Seattle (I live in Kansas) but the seller mailed me the owner's manual along with other info on the bus.

The whole setup is rather counter intuitive (IE, essentially pull the handle back to latch it forwards), and I've determined that once I finally get the bus, I'm going to have to take some time to teach my kids how to properly work the thing!

It seems like there's at least one post a weeks about some early bay owner learning about fully closing the slider on the bus they've had for 20 years.

Thanks Tcash for starting this thread. Driving the bus for 17 years and never closed the slider the way you mentioned. Embarassed Embarassed It's not my fault the owners manual didn't make sence. Laughing Laughing

I roll the door all the way forward and then a gentle push inward at the rear with my hands palm closes and latches it. So if I ever paint it then evidently there is a way to avoid finger prints on the door.

So why is there a big long depression in the door above the latch and just a little one below? I tried once to move the handle upward CW and it didn't move. So swinging the handle down CCW is the only way it ever gets done.
And the handle on the inside works backwards from the way it would be the most handy and usable.

I was glad to see this: never would have known. So I guess that owner's manual is for reading, huh? Might take a look, next week.

Imagine this scenario. Someone in the back of the bus (a child perhaps) grabs the inner door handle just as you accelerate. The force of your acceleration causes them to pull the door handle and open it. The door is now open while you are moving. The sticker on your steering system tells you in Deutsch not to drive with the sliding door open. Trust the German engineers DB...... Very Happy Wink

I wonder if they changed the design on the later bays? Mine opens when the inside handle is pulled back (CCW) and can be locked when the handle is pushed forward (CW)

Yes, 74+ opens like you would expect a door on an American van to open, I guess they were going after a wider customer base who couldn't figure it out.

You must have missed the thread from the other day where this topic began. Hence, the instructive TCash thread.

No I saw it, I just didn't realize we had some many people here that didn't know how to properly operate an Early Bay Slider.

Not everyone has the simple design and different proceedure like you do.

1. Remove padlock from gate latch.
2. Swing door open on it hinges.
3. On a windy day secure it open with a bungee so it won't slam shut.

You must have a different hiding place other than the Samba gallery for your pictures. But we know you replaced the slider with a swinger Laughing

I've instructed several new bus owner on how it works. Can't think of any other van type vehicle that operates the same way and like has been said it's not very intuitive.

Hmmm.

But, in case of what I wrote, it was in reference to myself.

The door on my 1984 F'nDodge van works exactly the same and for the first 10 years we had it we were pushing in on the back if it didn't fully latch too Surprised , the only difference is the internal handle is mounted facing up and further back from the end of the door so it's natural for most passengers to pull it back to open it. None of that helps at all in the F'nDodge or the bus with most modern teenaged kids, they are completely perplexed by a door you have to turn something on to open or latch thanks to the self opening/closing power sliders in modern minivans.

Both the bus and the F'nDodge door will close fully with no handle twisting if a window is down and you give it a good slam, windows all up means you'll be twisting the handle up.
