A am guessing a little bit but it looks like it's from late 1957 from the VIN # and rear end listing here:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/chassisdating.php

I do not know what N means.

You can also look at the casting dates of the transmission case halves.

Does it have reduction gear boxes on the axles, Christian ?
if the tri rib '29#' shift cover with the low shift rod input is original to the gear case it means that it is a 1953 to 1955 synchromesh ( except first gear) genuine Barndoor unit.
also this front (nose) cover will not fit on an early (non synchro) split bug without heavy modifications. so chances are good that the whole transmission is late BD. oil filler plug says so as well.
the date code 7 6 25 makes it a June 7th of 2nd workshift 1955. which of course is not a Barndoor anymore. but its still an early Wolfsburg ( post BD) date, and these 1955 buses still had the old axle and transmission cradle like a BD.
so most probably this transmission is a straight fit for your 54BD, but originally came in a very early non BD 1955 Wolfsburg bus.

Thank you!
The reduction boxes were sadly cut off.
i am confused about the 29. Number?
Anyone know if and where the Wolfsburg bus Gearboxes have the Numbers?
is there a other way that i can check whats is inside this suprise box? Laughing

This is the part # of the casing.

Looks for a "2A-" serial number on the side, either near the nose cone or on a raised area a little behind the nose cone but on the side.

Is the 2A stamping on the nose cone or on the gearbox casing ? I have found the following stamps on the nose cone 21.09.2 , I assume this is a part number, thanks

the 21.*** is the cast part number on the nose cone.

you want to look for a stamped number on the case behind the nose cone .

On the side of the casing.

Maybe this is a better pic, also from page 1 of this thread:

Thanks for your help gentlemen. I will try and post photos tomorrow of my gearbox . I don’t see any 2A stamping on the gearbox casing. It does come complete with its reduction boxes.
