I might be cross posting for some info I am looking for= many folks are different platforms of sharing info (samba) (facebook)

After 4 months of waiting for build I have “finally” brought home my Westy!
I do have one “extreme: issue is that she failed AZ emissions 2 times and her co levels were 147/162. My builder has stated that he has replaced a fuel injector, checked OBD1 codes (none shown) and has replaced the cat and exhaust – I believe he is using Small Cars. Compression is excellent in all 4- She has a Subaru 2.5 from a 2004 forester –
Looking for suggestions and possibly of someone in the Phoenix or greater area that is keen to finding issues or assisting.

The builder has done the following-
2.5 subaru
limited slip auto trans
front rear bumpers
new upholstery
Fox shocks
New coils
South African grill
Awning

I have the following that still need to be placedin the Westy-
Gowesty propane tank
Das Mule side bars
Yakima roof rack
Rubber mats
New curtains
And other fixtures-

We have not named her yet but hope to meet many of you at events or gatherings!

Rocko

Check the front air/ fuel ratio sensor (on that vintage of Subaru it replaces the front o2 sensor). It has much to do with how rich the motor will run, and many many of them have been replaced...The part number is 22791aa00a.

Hope that helps.

Great looking van!

I've heard of knock sensors failing on these and not throwing a CEL.

Both junkyard EJ motors I've pulled have had bad knock sensors.

The first time I took my OBDII Subaru-powered westy to get emissions tested it failed with high CO levels. The only codes it was throwing were for the knock sensor and the fuel temperature.

If you unplug the knock sensor and plug the wire into a 470 KOhm resistor to ground, the ECU will think there is no pinging going on and will not mess up the timing/mixture (which would stop the pinging and also cause high emissions). My Subaru engine went from abysmally failing to passing with flying colors with just the knock sensor resistor bypass.

Is that definitely your problem? No
Is it a really good idea to drive around long time with no knock sensor? No
Is a 470 KOhm resistor a super cheap and easy thing to throw at the problem? Yes
Will this change get your van to pass emissions? Possibly!

Good Luck!
