found this when I was taking the coil off - was not connected - just laying tugged behind the risers. What the heck is it? _________________ 1963 Beetle

It's a capacitor. 0.47 microfarad. |

Indeed. The connector piggybacks onto the black wire coming from the ignition to the coil that lands on terminal 15. The body of the unit slides under the nearest coil mounting screw to connect to ground (needs metal connection here, not just paint). This capacitor on the positive side of the coil smooths out the electrical spike of the points that can affect radio reception, and it is a "radio interference suppression capacitor".
It is different from the condenser on the distributor in that the condenser absorbs the spike when the points open, so they don't burn prematurely from arcing when the circuit opens from ground. The added radio noise suppression capacitor on the positive side of the coil apparently dampens/filters any spike that might carry back through the ignition circuit to the dashboard/radio antenna area.
Whether or not you have points, you really don't need it because I suspect you are probably not listening to AM on a stock radio any longer; even if you have one, you spend more time listening to the raspberry purr of a finely tuned VW motor, right? _________________ '71 Westy w/ a 1776 singleport, 34P3 & 205Q. I still use the AM now and then although I'm not trying to drag in those far away weak stations when out in the middle of the prairies anymore, not much ignition or charging interference with the local stations but I do get the click when the brake lights come on, good to confirm they work now and then. But most of the time I listen to station OFF as the sound from the back is much sweeter and more interesting _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
