Curious if you pulled the fuel tank panel and checked your fill hose and vent line hoses? I just pulled mine today and found they were original and that's why I have fuel smells with a full tank. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Found the missing tins and ordered them, cleaned up the engine. Lots of maintenance

Paint
Moving along nicely. Now that the engine is all tidied up I can focus on making it a nice ride (suspension) |

Not to thread jack but I am having a similar issue. My 70 Bay has a single port however the engine case has the following engine code (which was not on that list posted ^^)
U0484393 |
I am in the process of using a U043 case to build a stroker for my bus. (Even older) It will be a dual port 74mm stroke X 88mm bore. It has 10mm studs that were inserted. It has a nice sized oil pick-up (18mm od) I think this one was for a Type 3 as it has the type 3 blank off, I am not sure if it was added later or not but it also has the dip stick tube.
Both our case numbers fall within the early 1971 Type 3 group here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/serialnumberst3.php But yeah they may also be aftermarket ????? Not sure! Has your case been inserted?
Looks like a fuel injected 54 hp pancake engine case! Those were very nice running engines! Not sure what the difference in case design is for Horse Power probably just the case deck height! Should not matter at all. I plan on building mine for about 90 HP. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

Cliton's manual is better then none at all, But Bently is the shits

Anit no 60hp with a single port
Nice bus,My drum brakes work good enuff,(once adjusted they are better)But I don't drive faster then my angle can fly and live in BFE ,,only Deer&Elk country to watch for Madmike _________________ 'Black Ice'Drag Buggy 'Turbo'

Means it probably came from a Type 3 |
So a type three block with single port stuff on it? Does that mean its the 60HP motor?.. im confused now. I was reading through my Chiltons manual and was trying to figure it out. |

So my Engine case has a U for the first letter. What does that mean? I thought it was supposed to have an A? |

Finally getting to work! Happy to say I am pleased with the condition of everything. Couple odd things but overall stock with little to no molesting from previous owners. No hacking, no weird wiring.
Once the motor was out I pulled the fuel tank cover to check things out. No rust inside at all and the fuel tank looks pristine. So i sealed it back up since id rather not touch it if i'm not having any issues with it.
I have a few questions in this thread I started of you can help..

Otherwise here are some pics:
Found why it was hard to get it into gear. Parts of the throw out bearing was lying in the bellhosuing.
Wrong dizzy? New Solex H30 31PICT carb running rich?

While this link does not answer the question it is a good resource for the differences in bus brakes and years: Disc Brake Conversions,
And Here in this link about rims RCR Jacob's of Vacaville, CA has them: Info on porsche wheels write up. Looks like it's a 1974.

I can't wait to put them on.
Will be running 18x8 Turbo twist wheels with 245/40/18 tires. |

Hmm good to know I will hafe to read up about that some more.
The more I read the more I think it may be too expensive to swap front and rear. If anything i may just get the disc front to fit the wide 5. |

Out of curiosity why do you want discs up front? |
Drum brakes are teh suck IMO. I honestly just want disc up front. I also want the options of swapping to a different wheel type. I plan on lifting slightly and running some meaty tires. |

It has a folding hammock "cot" up top needs cot material to be sewn on. I think Porsche 944 front disc brakes fit. The aftermarket kits to make them disc are pretty spendy and rare! Looks like it's a single port 1600 which should get a little better gas milage. Be nice to rebuild it as a 1971 Dual port engine though! Keep your eye's open for a rebuildable core complete dog-house engine! (Got to have the 3 point rear mount holes in the case!) Or if you have a good dual relief case you could just buy the dog-house fan shroud etc and put dual port heads on. The Dual DRLA or IDF carbs are the way to go on these early bay window busses like ours.
It great that you got a camper! So nice to have a camper! We never want to drive our other cars. |
Im interested in the 944 brake swap we have at least 5 at my local pick an pull. Any links to this swap that can confirm they will work? |

This is my first year with the camper also.
Those camping trips are truly epic.
I replaced my cot earlier this year.
Good place to stash a kid.
Bus depot has good canvas replacements for your pop top too.
Good luck man. _________________ 1968 Beetle
