Well, I'm still in bed, but I have to get things ready.
Shona and I are heading off tomorrow for a 1000 mile plus round trip.
Plan is to leave from near Edinburgh on the East coast in two cars, drop the cat off at Shona's mum on the West coast then head down in the Ghia through the Borders to the Karmann Ghia Owners Club International rally in Shropshire, England for the weekend. Then head up through the Peak District to York to watch the first two stages of this years Tour de France in Harrogate and York.
The Ghia is running well, fingers crossed, so todays plan is a wash and wax, and pack my bags. Hopefully we'll have time to post pics of pretty scenery and the car. We're bound to have rain (Britain in the summer!) but hopefully not the real heavy stuff that creeps through the gap between the 'vert top and the windscreen at any speed over 55mph, like last weekend. Guess that's why we carry a towel.
Wish us luck, trouble free motoring and a good internet connection and I'll do my best to post pics rather than requests for mechanical advice! _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper

Good luck on your trip. Sounds like a lot of fun.
You're welcome to stop off at my place in Preston as you pass if you need a brew. |

Apologies for crappy phone pics...
Tools, spares, emergency kit gathered together.
Foam and powder extinguishers, litre bottle of fuel instead of bulky 5l can, jump leads, idiot book, clutch and throttle cables, fanbelt etc etc...
Blazecut already installed (paranoid, me?)
Hopefully wont need all that, so stowed behind the rear window
Fire extinguishers reachable behind the front seats, in little padded bags.
Getting there... _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper

Look to be well packed for the trip!! Adventure awaits, have fun.
Retrowagen once wrote its good to just keep the fire extinguisher sittting behind the seat, immediate access. Thats where i keep mine now, always at the ready. |
Cheers, never had to use it on my car, thank God, but it was quickly at hand to help two others so far...
Neal, we toast you and wish you a wonderful and fun road trip from Scotland south and back again. You're going across the Channel, too, to see the TdF? _________________ David Ruby

Thanks for messages! Le Tour is starting in Yorkshire this year, 3 stages in the UK. Stage one goes right past my old school, but we're hoping to catch the finish of stage one in Harrogate, and the start of stage two, in York.
Plans have had a slight change, I'm going to have to take the cat in the Ghia tomorrow, as Shona will be stuck at work till late, I'll be sure to post a picture (might be the first for a 'Cats in Karmanns' thread! _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper

My last road trip was through the north of Scotland, and I found the countryside so beautiful that I can't understand why anyone would want to leave. That said, there are few pleasures to match a road trip in a classic car through a nice country with good roads, and with a pleasant companion in the passenger seat.
When my resto has been completed, I'm going to do a round-trip of both the larger islands of New Zealand. I'll watch your posts with a keen eye; your trials and tribulations (hope there are none of the atter) will be a guide for the rest of us. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

I'm sorry but we have to draw the line here! Aren't there enough awful cat pictures and videos on the web as it is? 'Cats in Karmanns' would just be too much. I feel confident John Moxon would step in and pull the plug on this thread, should it come to that!
Have a great trip and keep the (cat-free) pictures coming. _________________ 1957 Oval Window
