I picked up a 3H gearbox for parts the other day and couldn't believe just how bad it was inside.

I had to chisel the pinion bearing retaining nut off due to the state of the pinion head. I couldn't get the tool on!

The main case didn't survive.

Despite the carnage at the diff end of the gearbox, 1st and reverse and everything around it was in good condition. This and the obvious what damage leads me to the conclusion that it's been run out of oil and driven at high speed until it seized!

It beats my previous worst transmission damage found...

This was a Syncro AAK gearbox that I bought for spares (as previously shown on The Samba!).

The previous one to that was the front diff from Limey which had really eaten itself. I still have the pinion shaft (now in 2 pieces).

That pinion shaft "takes the cake". I don't think I've ever seen any shaft taken this close to snapping in two, yet removed in one piece.

I can't believe the damage to the pinion and the crown almost survived intact!

The amount of heat that it would have taken to do this... at what temp does hardened steel turn into mush?

Found this yesterday. Eh? Syncro front differential snapped pinion shaft.

Was there any play in the pinion bearing and how is the spigot bearing in the input shaft?

I'd expect that to be caused by the shaft having to flex to take account of a bearing with play.

That or an out of balance VC...
