Here in Nova Scotia in Chester Basin is Jeff, like Cher he only needs a first name! A great guy and has a nice setup for vans. Jeff's Old Volks Home. He has kept me running for a few years now.

In Calgary, Paul and Dale, and all the other GREAT guys at Tony's Auto, just SE of the Calgary Tower. Always have time to give great advice, longterm care and suggestions to ensure both safety as well as longevity.
They did my GoWesty engine swap, adjusted and made sure all was perfect.

I second Hans as well. He's saving my bacon right now on my '85 westy while we are passing through Salt Lake City.

For all the mechanical tasks I end up tackling myself:

Thank you! and much appreciation to The Samba community. Without all of the information posted on this forum I wouldn't have attempted anything past chaining my own oil, and would have missed out on a good deal of rewarding fun. Again, thank you to everyone for providing this outstanding pool of knowledge, support and entertainment.

For all the things I can't do:

George and Jason at Porbug - I can't say enough good things about that shop.

The one opening the way to new eras.

The simple guys who found a easy way to fix stuff easily and share it here.

And of course, any crazy vanagon shop owner that still want to work on those square box.

I second this. I typically do all my own work but I used them to get my nonfunctional stock AC system running and it was worth every penny. While they were working on the then new-to-me van they checked a few other things and let me know what they recommended I address sooner rather than later.

They stepped up when I had a failure on the AC slightly out of warranty they didn't bat an eye at making it right. Good to know I've got a trustworthy fallback in case I need work done and don't have the time to do it myself.

Two thumbs up for Lusti Motors in San Diego.

I broke down there and they really took good care of me. They are an independant who specialized in VWs in the old days.

They had cool old photos on the wall from the 60s of their bays filled with bugs.

I'm gonna give some props to Scott Cunningham, owner of Cunningham Tuning in Bellingham, WA. Although he currently hasn't worked on my vanagon, he's done great work on several of my other vw/audi cars. He is a very talented mechanic/fabricator and it's not uncommon to see a customer vanagon with a suby or tdi swap in his parking lot. Very reasonable prices and a very knowledgeable and humble guy Very Happy

Verner and Verner's automotive here in Boulder CO. Does a fine job when I get in over my head, and he doesn't have a massive attitude like someone else here in town does Shocked

Vancouver Transmission in Surrey does really good work at very reasonable prices and, while not being a 'specialty shop', they actually like Vanagons!

Peter and staff at Van Cafe have always been generous with long distance help and getting to meet Stephan and see Stephan's Autohaus was one of the highlights of our recent trip to California. Wink

I'd like to take a moment to express my deep appreciation for my own mechanical abilities and the care, precision and attention to detail that I use when fixing my own vehicles. I'd even like to express my appreciation for some challenging events earlier in my life that inspired me to learn to work on my own vehicles, purchase the tools and develop the skills required so that no one else does any work on any of my vehicles, ever. I'd also like to express my deep appreciation for my ipod and the local library which provides me with free audiobooks that make the time working on my vehicles remarkably enjoyable and have taken away even the last vestiges of any angst related to the effort and time involved in doing the work.

X 1M for Stephan!

There are similar "Great Mechanics" threads on other forums that get plugged into a map. Anyone know how to do this? Otherwise these threads get very long and are almost impossible to reference. Of course, there is always Vanagon Rescue Squad. Regardless, it's always refreshing to read a rave vs. a rant.

With the intent of not incriminating my mechanic, this one goes out to the guy in Kansas City who always passes my van's bi-yearly inspection in >10 minutes with little fuss Wink

I do about 90% of my own work but when I'm in need of help or need that special tool (or next day transmission delivery) Alaric In Fairfax, VA has always been there when I needed him. Thanks! Very Happy

Peter and crew at Van Cafe. We all owe them a huge kudos.

Perhaps lessor known in Santa Cruz as far as Vanagons go, but R&D Performance. Rick is a 100% stand up guy and I think Mathias might have been born in the VW factory in Germany. I have NEVER left there feeling like I didn't get more than my money's worth.
