Last summer I was in Seward and I spotted three Vanagon's off Nash Road. I went and talked to the guy and he let me look for an antenna I need. He was a super nice guy who seemed more interested in 1600 air cooled stuff than Vanagon's. If I had somewhere to keep them I'd go back down and try and buy them for parts rigs. I"m afraid that after this gentleman passes they'll be headed to the crusher. Maybe one of you Homer or Anchor Point guys has room for them. I just don't have the space in Los Anchorage.

Well i made a hot lap to seward yesterday. Found nash rd, found the car on a post, but no vanagons. Looks like the old junk yard or auto shop has long gone. Went a few, miles past up nash rd and didnt see anything.

I did see 3 syncros. One looked like an 86, 7 pass tintop full of people oblivious to me waving like a jackass. Rolling Eyes
Another tintop parked in a driveway, gold, lifted with a roofrack. Looked sweet.
Finally a dark blue westy missing the forward cargo section of his fiberglass.

Alaskadan> I was in Seward a couple weeks ago too and I didn't see the vans either. Real bummer because there was at least four Westies there at one point. Sad

Do the bostig so I can take notes. Can't figure out why the kit is 6k. I keep looking for ways around it. The complete motor is less than 1,500 but the hardware to hook it up is 6,000?

If I had the bread for either I'd go 1.8T in a heartbeat. Very Happy

Give one or three reasons I'd want a 1.8t over a zetec.

It has more power than the Zetec by a large margin. Being a turbo it does not lose power at altitude like a naturally aspirated engine does. The kit that SAH makes is first rate, albeit pricey. I've been running a 2.5 Subie at 165HP for the last ten years. If the 1.8T was available back when I was doing my conversion I'd have given it serious consideration and likely would have gone that route. The money is more but that is not an issue for me in the grand scheme. YMMV. 😀

Well I'll hijack this thread a bit more since I brought up my swap and you all are putting your .02 in. It's also nice to put my thoughts down so I can come back later and try to figure out what the hell I was thinking.

The engine swap/conversion has been a tough one for me to decide on. I had decided on doing an 2.0L ABA, a wrecked '97 Golf with low mileage came my way for next to nothing. Started getting diesel bits together but not all. WBX was still running at the time. Well life happens and that was 4 years ago and the Golf engine is in a stand in the shop untouched from when I pulled it back then. I was going for a low budget approach on this one.

Now I have more funds to work with so I start researching. Thought about a kit from FAS for the ABA but decided I wanted more power than that. I also wanted a more comprehensive kit. I really like the idea of keeping it VW, the 1.8t and Stephans kit. Had made my mind to go that route till I started looking at acquiring an engine and all the stuff that's part of the engine package need for the swap. Then shipping up here to Alaska, yikes. And high mileage engines on top of that. Be stupid not to at least do some engine work, top end? Complete tear down. Why go through all this and worry about reliability because of a high mileage engine.

I had kind of ruled out the Bostig mostly because I just couldn't see putting a ford in my VW. Then I started looking into it. Easy install, fits under the deck lid, and I can get an engine here in AK. I like the Zetec for the simplicity and availability. Parts are pretty inexpensive as well.

I figure the 1.8t will probably cost at least $3000 more than the Bostig, more expensive to maintain and repair as well. How much is that extra HP worth? Cool factor is there with the 1.8t and keeping it VW. The Bostig looks like it will be easier and 135hp would probably just do me fine.

So that is where I am and I will decide one or the other soon.

Sean

Not to throw a wrench in your decision making but here are my thoughts.

-6k for a conversion kit is really high- Subaru kits are half that
-Engine availability and price - We have Subarus everywhere up here and I bought a spare engine last year with 70k miles for $1000
-If you are looking in the 135 hp range you might as well mentally crunch Bostig vs Subaru
-Those of us with them, love them. Great conversions for half the money and equal the hp and reliability.

The way I see it you are going to spend big money on hp or spend a moderate amount on moderate hp. Why big money on moderate hp?

I dont know how that triple post happened. Did it work? Supposedly the hp on a zetec can easily be bumped up to a couple hundred hp. Who has first hand experience in doing this in their van? What did you add to gain the extra hp and what did it cost?

Finally made my decision and its going to be the 1.8T using Stephan's kit.

I did briefly think about the Suby 2.5 but alas I am a VW guy. Talked with NW auto parts, Anchorage salvage yard, apparently someone in Seattle is buying all of there low milage 2.5s and what they do have are at least twice what they want for a 1.8T.

Since putting in my 2.5 ive watched craigslist and have seen/passed on 4 to 5 worthy subys in the past couple years. They do come up. 1.8t though, cool like to check it out. Thats an expensive kit. Apparently its very complete. Are you sending your trans out for a rebuild?
