Hello All. I'll be honest, I'm a complete newbie concerning anything vanagon related. But I'd love to learn.
My boyfriend and I bought a 1983 watercooled Vanagon this last weekend. It came with some sort of plastic portapotty that had the same color scheme as the vanagon and a top that fit nicely over it with the same upholstery material as the vanagon's seat leading us to believe it somehow came with the original vehicle. (The car is still all its original parts, minus the cheap stereo they've installed)
Also with it was this...
The owner (2nd owner and have only had the vehicle for a few months) seemed to also not be an expert concerning the vehicle. He said it was used to mount the portapotty and seat cushion behind the passenger seat for an extra seat.
I'm just not sure how that would really work as it was smaller than the portapotty
I apologize for the distorted photo. It actually from another person's ad we saw on craigslist that lead to us realize this piece wasn't some makeshift the previous owner made. I don't have access to my own unknown device so I screenshot that item in the background and blew it up.
Any clues on what this item is and what it's used for?

That looks to me like the 'box' that fits over the rear heater -- under the rear seat. It is upside down in the photo.
It's the thing my power inverter and tool box are sitting on top of is this photo (sorry, no decent photo on hand):
