Got all the bolts and nuts out but the pump will just not quite come out.
Ben says that if you loosen the two hose clamps on the joint for the bottom pipe, you can twist it out of the way.
This seems impossible.
This pipe has no room to move.
Is there something different with an automatic transmission?
Every other step went fairly smoothly.[/u] |

I've always removed the flange on the other end of that pipe. This I'm sure gives you enough room the get the pump off. |

Can you remove the flange without removing the oil filler tube?
Mine is butted right up against it. |

Yes. Your filler tube may be bent in some.
This is some of the design issues that were obviously considered
when building this engine, that no one appreciates. |

This took me forever. I ended up cutting the short rubber bits holding that pipe that goes behind the crank pulley and still barely had enough space to wiggle it out of the way of the pump. The pipe stayed in place. I don't think it comes out of there with the crank pulley on. I never want to do a water pump in this motor again. I can do a full timing belt and water pump job on my 928 in less time. _________________ '91 Vanagon Carat
