Understood.

Stand there & watch the guy, when he gets the glass out inspect away, if you see anything tell him to come back in a couple of days or you'll call him when you get done .

Better yet, cut the moulding all the way around, kick the glass out, fix whatever you see & then order up the glass.
The No pressure method.

There ---that was pretty simple.

you mean you didn't get the hawk-proof coating? a shame, a shame!

I've hit a few small birds in my 43 years of driving but never taken a hit from one with any size. You'd need a friggin' Mad Max windscreen protector to save your glass from a red tailed hawk.

I was driving home from work with the window open and my elbow on the sill. When I was vacuuming up All the glass I found a few little breast feathers in the living area of the van - glad the hawk didn't come in the window...

Very sobering.

i removed my cracked one without incident, and went about scraping off the corner c/rust. there were no holes but certainly some brewing. i will need to paint before installing the window.

i'm picking up a ~$200 (CAN$240 after tax) windshield tomorrow from broco (hey bro, no fro?) in north van, and will drag it back to install it. i'll also ask them about windshield glue/sealant. i have a whole set of new seals that i'm slowly installing.

someone mentioned driving without the windshield. i'm pretty sure this is illegal. AFAIK, the way the laws work is if you vehicle was installed with a safety device (eg window) you need to keep it there. splitty safari dreams be damned. i may just drive down to the beach without the windshield in it, just cause. i don't think highway driving would be fun.

As for the tint band... I hate them. I am 6' 4" and the tint band intrudes on my normal view of the road area. Evil or Very Mad If you are shorter it may work well for you....

If your going to do it and hopefully only to the window installer, have an appointment slip to show any police that stop you and wear some safety glasses to kept the supersonic airstream out of your eyes...well, okay it's a VW...keep the bugs out!

I paid $20 at U-Pull in Denver, but it had a tiny chip in it which I filled with some runny polymer. That was 6 years ago and it is still working good.

Self-installation is pretty easy but a helper is recommended.

For reference I found my quote from Speedy in Courtenay BC and it was $349 CAD installed with me supplying the seal.

Can't you go through your insurance company? Just tell them the windshield is cracked (I don't know how) and they approve the replacement.

It's called a comprehensive coverage.
No deductable, no out of pocket expenditure.
Most full coverage policies have this included.
Call the glass company have the glass repaired, the insurnace co. pops for the glass--simple.
If you low balled your vehicles insurance , and just have public liability--you'll have no comp coverage.

And not worth the savings on vans worth more than a few thousand dollars, IMHO.

Yeah, I don't have the bare minimum insurance, but I don't have comprehensive. It is way too expensive here in BC with the semi-state monopoly of ICBC. When I had statefarm in Alberta it had some clause that lets you claim a windshield every year or two without hitting your no claims.

Here is what I ended up with. I'll be installing it this weekend after I do a bit of painting.

I spoke to the guy at broco glass about repairing the rot - he said they will repair some of the crap that they find behind the seal as part of the install process.

Moo Goo Gui Pan Glass.
Huh--

Comprehensive coverage isn't expensive here at all--
Cover's you for all kinds of unsavory outa control stuff that might happen to the Vehicle--glass is one of them and well worth the pennies it costs in the long run.

Yeah, it is Chinese - and slightly green - not clear like my last one. We'll see how it holds up. I read that the edges weren't the same on some replacements, but I compared my old glass with this one and it seemed about the same.

My last windshield had some small cloudy white spots forming in the corners. I guess that happens because of stress or age?

The white stuff is the laminate fogging up in the corner's.
Common thing to happen on an older piece of automotive glass.

Is that a permanent situation or can it be cleaned up in some form or fashion? I have what I think is an original one in one of my '85s and it's in good shaper, other than this fogging.

Nupe.

Do you know what laminates the glass together?

A sheet of plastic.
There is no way to clean up the smoked plastic layer other than replacing the glass with new.
