Small but time consuming job: the fuel tank for the diesel heater is under the floor of a built in cupboard. I have remade the floor in marine plywood and it now hinges to give access to the tank. Sweet.
I also created a false floor for above the heater itself to tidy away the wiring and to allow us to still use the space for storage.
Spoiler alert, I’m not a joiner, but I’m happy with the results!

Tidied the wiring for the diesel heater and wrapped the pump in rubber pipe lagging. The new shelves are nice and solid.

I’ve had a Hella rear fog light attached but not connected for a while to see if I liked the look. I do, but I decided it would be better wired as a third brake light as a safety feature. I sourced a high intensity (35w) bulb and I was re-wiring to fit a NOS Hella trailer electrical socket, so I tapped into the brake light feed and the earth. I figured the bulb would light with either polarity, but I hadn’t realised the fog lamp assembly has one terminal grounded through the case. So, a couple of blown fuses later, I fixed that problem!
Also, I’ve restored the old tow ball, and fitted everything up.
It’s impressively bright, but I might alter the angle. It’s tilted up at the moment to catch the attention of any tailgaters!

The drivers side mirror has loose glass and is held in place with tape. I knew I had some spare mirrors, in various states of repair but when I dug them out I was delighted to find a brand new drivers side one! So, on it went.
We had the day free for a trip today, so we headed down towards the English border and walked along the cliffs of a pretty remote stretch of coast. Got lost several times, following the wrong sheep track, but ended up at the ruins of Fast Castle, which dates from 1333 and is on a super dramatic cliff top plateau.

I love the hubcap on the spare, even though it might be looked upon as an extravagance by your kin...

Very good Steve!
Thanks. When we got the Kombi, over 20yrs ago, it had an older, domed, hubcap on the spare, but I could never get it to fit after the wheel rims were painted. I have an embarrassing number of hubcaps, so I just banged one on and I like the look too. Actually, the caps on the wheels are stainless steel repros with a deeper profile (which bugs me!) but I am a lot less worried about them coming off or being pinched! If I ever want to really dress her up I have some NOS hubcaps in the attic I can dig out!

On another note, I was surprised to learn yesterday that we are going away for a week camping on Monday (I had thought it was the week after!) So, I thought I had better get a couple of things organised. I have a variable voltage regulator so that the AGM batteries get the best charge and it has been set a little low at 14.1v. The adjusting screw is TINY and underneath. I needed a dental mirror in one hand to see it, while I tried to orientate a screwdriver with my other hand! I think I have set it to 14.5v, but I won’t know till we get on the road. I have a battery monitor up front, so I will get a good reading from that.
Bedding, camping chairs, food and drink have all been loaded up and the cat is anxious to make sure we don’t leave her behind!

Hi Harry! We have had a great trip, but no posts yet because we never had phone reception and the time to post on the Samba at the same time!
The weather was indeed pretty poor. Some nights around freezing, a lot of rain and even some snow on the Kombi! We did also have plenty of sunshine too, so it’s not all bad.

The trip got off to an annoying start when a hub cap flew off as we joined the main road to Edinburgh, but I pulled over and rescued it. I think the powder coat on the rims is so thick that it stops the hub caps seating properly, as we have had them pop off a couple of times. Luckily we haven’t lost one completely, but they are stainless replacements, so I’m pretty relaxed about it. I might sand down and paint the nubs on the rims to improve the attachment.
We headed North from Edinburgh and our first stop was at Loch Leven in Fife for lunch and while we were there we had a call from Shona’s sister saying she could meet us in Dunkeld, Perthshire. The rain was persistent, but not too heavy and we managed a walk in Birnam wood, which is mentioned in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and there is an ancient ‘Birnam Oak’ which dates from that forest. The town is also the historical divide between those who spoke lowland Scots ‘Lallans’ and Scottish Gaelic, hence the sign!

The journey North, and the rain, continued through the afternoon. On the plus side, the sun is setting after 9pm at the moment and it’s light till after 10pm. We stopped for a final coffee and a snack in the empty car park of Scotland’s highest distillery at Dalwhinnie. We were spending the night in a campsite in Inverness, on the banks of the Caledonian Canal which joins the North Sea and the Atlantic, via Loch Ness. Plenty of (VW!) camper vans here, maybe because it’s the start of the ‘North Coast 500’ route?

The canal has great views out to the Moray Firth and the Kessock bridge. We were lucky enough to spot otters in the water, and the slowly decaying skeleton of an old wooden ship as well as the slowly decaying remains of a VW bay camper in someone’s back yard! The campsite was right on the banks of the canal and very pretty when the sun came out. We had a nice meet up and the walk was with an old friend who lives in Inverness too.

After Inverness we followed the route of the NC500, around the Beauly Firth and through some remote countryside. We chanced upon a lovely forest walk when we stopped for coffee. Beautiful trees, plenty of birds and some ruined bridges and buildings, taken over by moss and ferns. Further on, we stopped by the side of Loch Broom, just before Ullapool for a last cup of tea before we drove the last section to the cottage our friends had rented (although there was some discussion about whether we should stop in Ullapool for ice cream... )

Fingers crossed for you UK trip Steve! At least you know what Scotland has to offer!

The Ullapool/ice cream question was resolved by stopping for ice cream. Ullapool is the setting off point for the ferry to Stornoway, Lewis and the isles, so there were plenty of folk for Medo to watch from the Kombi while we went for a walk. Next, we headed to the cottage at Strathkanaird and waited for our friends to finish their days walk.

The next morning we headed out and did a local walk called ‘The Postie’s walk’ which was the precarious route that the postman used to take along the hills and cliffs from Achiltibuie to Ullapool. We stopped half way for a packed lunch (and a nap-in my case!)

I need to get my bride into that setting with no cell phone service. Covid has had a toll on her, renovating one major hospital, and building a 1000 bed hospital in one month. I hope we can get her away from work for a week in 2021

We were still full of beans after the walk, so we headed for the West coast to catch the evening sun (or hope for the rain to stop!)
Achnahaird Bay is beautiful, but Scottish sunbathing is sometimes fully clothed! We climbed up to get an amazing view of the Summer isles with Skye, the Hebrides and the mountains of the West highlands in the distance. Stac Pollaidh is the impressive mountain we passed on the way home. By the time we got back to the cottage, the cat was pleased to see us, we were ready for a curry and eventually, bed.

I can sympathise. It’s been a tough year for everyone, but I know that some people have had challenges that are off the scale. The highlands are definitely very good for clearing the head.

We had our amazing tour organiser, Donald, who seemed to pick the perfect activities every day. The next rainy morning he decided that visiting a cave would work, so a long walk in to the ‘Bone caves’ where a stash of 3000+ year old bones had been discovered from the last ice age. Reindeer, wolves, and even a polar bear skull. The sign said ‘please don’t dig up the floor’! Then to another stunning beach at Achmelvich, where we walked to a ruined water mill from 1750 and drove on to a well earned lunch of hot pies (and our local soft drink, ‘made from girrrders’) in Lochinver.

Well, we finally had to leave to head home, but what a great stay in the North, despite a bit of rain! The authorities are starting to see how they can encourage sustainable camping in this beautiful area, but it is becoming very popular and the infrastructure is lagging behind a bit. We stopped at Rogie falls for a walk and during the long drive to Shona’s sisters house went past two ski areas where it was snowing. Late May. Welcome to Scotland!

I’ve got a couple of videos to give you an idea of our summer weather. Obviously not too bad, but we did need the diesel heater to supplement the stock heating for a while after the top!

We spent the last night of the trip in Shona’s sisters garden, not a bad spot to camp! The next day would be Shona’s nieces 21st birthday, so we had a pre-birthday party in the garden. We’ve all got used to these things now!
Finally got home as the sun was setting (9:30pm)
