Time for another update!
As I mention above, the Kombi has been passed on to a bodywork guy I have never met, which I was a bit anxious about.
The good news is that I have had a lot of really good communication with him now and we have agreed a plan and how deeply to take the bodywork restoration, he has started stripping back the problem areas and he is able to fabricate the panels/structural areas that cannot be purchased. It’s going to be a long haul but we are definitely moving forward!
I will add a few posts that show specific areas and the plans and also what these areas looked like when they last had (temporary!) repairs or pint from me. _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper

We put the discussions of the T4, T5 and T6 into this forum, under the US moniker Eurovan, under the usual colonial weakness of acknowledging there are other countries in the World

Small update on the Orange Kombi:
I had a review from a bodywork restoration guy in the North of England for a full resto of the problematic body areas (which I have been patching up/living with for several years!)
Our new California camper means this Kombi can move to a preservation/retirement stage of life and although the body is in a pretty good state there are some problem areas: the roof line where the pop top contacts the roof, all four wheel arches in one way or another, and some other minor bits.
I dropped off the Kombi in January and I had a rather disappointing e mail last week to say that he hadn’t made a start on the work and in fact he was winding up his business for a combination of reasons, mainly energy and material costs and the low volume of specialist VW work…
On the plus side, he has recommended an experienced body/paint guy in the same town and I have had some long phone calls and e mails and the new guy is keen to start work and we are in agreement about the plan. Basically stripping the paint to assess what’s actually needed and then welding/repair and repaint in the original colour.
It’s a great shame that things have panned out like this, and my options are limited in our region but we are keen to keep the van for the foreseeable future and I’m happy with the plan as it stands. I will update when I can (he should send progress pics) and I will go and take a look when we get back from Europe in about 6 weeks! _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper

Is that one from the Eire? Trying to make sense of that 72 plate… |
Sorry, missed some of these replies! The plate is the ‘new’ format of UK plate. Basically the ‘72’ means second half of 2022. Clunky.
I’m definitely not about to start a new thread on the T6.1 California but I thought some of you might be interested to see some pics. We have come away to Croatia (with the cat, of course!) and have been doing a bit of exploring. The California is a delight to drive and has loads of room inside compared to a Bay. Neat little touches are a picnic table and chairs hidden in the sliding door and tailgate. Informal and formal camping has been great and old-fashioned and the view from the upper double bed (huge!) has been splendid!
Still planning to keep the two Dormobiles in the meantime, but moving more towards restoration and day tripping/car shows than extended camping.
Happy to answer questions about the T6.1

…..a VW factory California camper conversion…..travelling across Europe will be a lot faster (and dare I say, more comfortable?!) |
yeah, but, many of us happily trade fast and comfort for cool. only a vw nerd would think a california camper is cool.
count me in. _________________ 1978 Champaign Edition 2 Westfalia

one of life’s great tragedies/ironies is that the california camper never made it to california.
they were just using us for our marketing value.
glad your problem was minor.
