Back home again and a few small jobs on a rainy day.
The trailer socket wiring now tucks away out of sight, but it’s neater than the mess of twisted together wires and electrical tape the ‘electrician’ had left!
The original tow ball and a NOS Hella towing socket are partially fitted.
I have made a small mounting plate for the aux fuse box and secured it with rivnuts (my new toy is a rivnut tool). I also put a nut to secure strain relief for the cables below.
I have a couple of controllers for the Chinese diesel heater. The plain rotary one is less obtrusive but I didn’t like the exposed wires so I disassembled it and added heat shrink. There is a Velcro dot on the wall, so I just stuck some on the back and mounted it there. Bonus, it’s removable!

Can you show us a pic of the whole hitch. Does it bolt to the exterior of the bumper?
Look at those Utlegra cranks! _________________ __________

Unless there is a lot more to that hitch that we can’t see, hope your not towing much weight. |

The tow ball is really just there to clamp the base for the bike rack. |
Although I think I could tow with the hitch I just installed, I also have it just to hold a bike rack.
We all gotta chip in and get you some rear hubcaps. 😉 _________________ __________

Just caught up with what you've been doing underneath, a nasty job well done. Looks much better.
The pics of the bus out and about look great, she is in superb condition, cared for! _________________ Major; 1977 Westfalia Campmobile

wow, a gas powered soldering iron for £13.99
For my (much smaller also as the Dremel) "Weller WP2 Pyropen Jr" I spended around £80
(and it works fine and handy for me since 20 years - only for long and big tasks I use the electric one)
But, sorry, your crimping plier is rubbish for our classic uninsulated, open connectors. This one is intended for the cheap plastic-coated ones.
Better buy something more expensive to easy get good and robust results.
I use a KNIPEX PreciForce 97 52 34 for traveling and standard tasks at our aircooled cars.
Sorry, not sure which kind of torpedo fuse I see there - cheap plastic ones?
I use only old ceramic based fuse that have less issues with thermal expansion and risk of fire - than the simple plastic ones.
(from left to right) 10 A for the classic 220 V Westfalia power input (2.5 A for old radios looks similar), old ceramic based topedo fuse 8 A, new ceramic based topedo fuse 16 A:
Whats about something for testing in your travelling electrical tool kit? A multimeter or small classic test lamp?

Sigh
Everytime you pick up a German tool, the rest of the world hangs its head in shame. Except the Swiss.
(if I duplicated all my good tools for travel in my fleet of cars and boats I couldn’t afford internet, so the cheap ones have their place) _________________ .ssS! |

Very true!
I take Rolf-Stephan’s point though. The crimpers are not my usual ones, which do have the profile for the brass connectors (but are nowhere near as fine as the ones he pictured!)
The crimpers in my picture are a terrible set, which are good for nothing other than stripping insulation and wire cutting at a push! I should throw them out, but they were an easy addition to the proto-kit.
Actually, I have specific tool rolls for the Ghia and for the Kombi, with a larger, supplementary kit that can move between the two. I’m sure we’ve all wrestled with the ‘essential tools and spares’ question, and the compromises involved can never be resolved!
I’ll repost the pictures for your amusement!... _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper

Then a general tool set, for longer trips, that will go between the Ghia and the camper as needed. Not as neat, but fills a few gaps and makes a good selection with the other tool roll.
Of course, doesn’t include the various spare parts and some other tools (like a bottle jack and breaker bar) that I might dig out to show if I get the chance.
Contents (L-R):
Leatherman multi tool
Small pry bar
Vintage 3/8” ratchet and extensions
1/4” driver
Rack of bits, hex, flat and Philips screwdriver
Adapter to convert ratchet to 1/4” and 1/2”
Spark plug socket, large flat bit, triple square for CV boots
Key sockets and wobble extension
Zip ties
Bahco fishtail adjustable
Heavy scissors
Wire brush
Picks, mirror, forceps

As a diversion (again!) today, I dug out the ‘essential’ spare parts I carry in the Kombi. This includes some items that don’t fit our bus, but might be useful for a fellow VW owner. I think all of these could be fitted away from home with the tools I have, and there are a couple of extra useful tools (3’ breaker bar- not shown, and the 46mm rear hub socket). The starter motor is NOT a spare, I’m servicing it!
Clockwise from top right:
LED and conventional bulbs
Voltage regulator
Points set and 2x condensers
WD40 water dispersant (not a lubricant !)
Ethyl chloride spray-can help ID vacuum leaks
Throttle and clutch cables for a manual bus
Fuel filter
46mm socket
2x spare coils-I think one can stay in the garage!
Alternator belt
Fuel cutoff solenoid
Fully refurbished distributor and HT leads
NOS fuel pump and brake cylinder
Oil change gasket set
CV joint boot, bolts and clamps

The proper work on the Kombi has stalled temporarily, but we are in Covid lockdown again here, so I can do some satisfying, inconsequential things. One of these was sorting out tools and tool rolls.
The Ghia has a gathered together ‘factory’ tool roll, which is not totally correct, but near enough. Also now a retro roll of mostly vintage tools as a broader set for the most basic roadside tasks. These will live in the Ghia, and I made up a similar roll of basic tools for the Kombi. I’ve also made a more comprehensive roll that will move between the Ghia and the Kombi for longer trips, as needed.
I’ll show the Ghia rolls, and a West German foot pump I found in the garage and restored, and then the Kombi tool kit(s).
