The emphasis of the show does seem to be on the unmodified end of the spectrum, which I love. The split screen van club had an awesome display and who wouldn’t drool at the Kubel and the Hebmüller? Tremendous!

The Karmann Ghia owner’s club had a great display, over 40 Ghias all told. You can tell I love a fire engine, and there were a smattering of Porsches too.

Sadly, the weather was not the best. Rain on and off on the day of the show and heavy rain just before I came to pack up the tent. Medo was happy to supervise from the comfort of the Kombi!

Time to move on…

It’s lucky the cat travels so well and we are three happy campers (most of the time!)
On the way home we headed inland to the edge of the Pennine hills. We had booked a beautiful campsite just outside historic Barnard Castle. Almost empty but very picturesque and great facilities. Lovely riverside walk to the town with more buildings from the 1600’s (and earlier) than you could imagine!

The final day’s drive took us through beautiful remote countryside, along Roman roads, over the Scottish border and the final stop was Jedburgh and the pic is of a house that Mary, Queen of Scots stayed in. In the foreground is a 1300 year old carved Celtic cross base. Cool.

Thanks for sharing our travels, we’ll be off again soon!

Great stuff, thanks for sharing Neal. Love living in New Zealand, but I definitely miss the way history drips from every corner back home, if I can call it that after 16 years away...

And pubs. I think the reason I stopped drinking is that without a proper pub to do it in, it's just not worth the effort. A good pub is a thing to cherish...!

This is a delayed series of posts from a road trip last week to the Highlands of Scotland to catch up with university friends who live in Ottawa, Canada.
Of course we took Medo, who travelled as usual on the fire extinguishers between the seats!
First stop was Shona’s sister’s house in Blairgowrie, Perthshire. Not strictly VW pics, but brother-in-law Paul has a couple of vintage motorbikes and we got the Velocette going and he rode it around the garden.
We also had a short walk in a local bluebell wood, but didn’t stay the night and headed up further North.

Our friends were staying in a rental cottage, and our initial plan was to ‘camp’ on their driveway but we discovered the owners lived next door and it wouldn’t go down well! So, we found a very cheap, European style ‘Aire’ in the next village, Kingussie. Almost zero facilities but very cheap and they had fresh water and a (portable!) toilet. The camp spot was virtually on the railway station platform on the main line to Edinburgh, so it was cute seeing the trains on their way through, including the Caledonian sleeper on its way to London.
Our own sleeper compartment was more comfortable though!

We were on the edge of the Cairngorm mountain range and the scenery is spectacular in any weather. Luckily it was bright and sunny (although cold and windy!)

I’m pleased to say, even in the sunshine, the bus barely heats up at all on the inside. Medo is very comfortable sunbathing on the worktop. We do have a 12v fan that runs off the leisure battery if we are at all concerned.
We had a mini tour of the local sights but the roads and attractions are all pretty quiet at the moment. The building that looks like a castle is in fact Ruthven barracks, an army station from the 1700’s for British troops patrolling various military roads across the Highlands.

We spent the evening at the cottage our friends were staying in. Pooling our food resources for a feast of curry, pizza, fresh fruit and cream. Delicious!

The next morning we found better public toilet facilities and showers in the village we were staying in and found another great walk up to a low mountain pass with a bothy (mountaineers hut) at the top.

Medo taking in the scenery, as ever!

At the risk of being accused of non-VW content I thought it was worth sharing our encounter with two intrepid American travellers we met. Their journey is certainly inspiring and I feel is very much in the spirit of this thread.
Andy and Dawn set off from Oregon at the start of the global pandemic and, undeterred, have travelled across and around North America, crossed from Baltimore to Liverpool, England, toured Europe and Scandinavia and plan to circumnavigate Africa, cross Asia, traverse Australia and travel up through South America. The map on the bonnet is evolving as they go. Wow.

Our own modest trip took us South again, past Loch an Eileen, through Perthshire, towards Dundee…

Shona’s brother John and his family live in Dundee. We spent a couple of nights there. Mostly relaxing, although I did spend some quality time stripping and rebuilding the carburettor on John’s 1980’s Honda! Shona was happy meeting a new puppy and the Kombi mileage happily tripped over to 237,000km!

We arrived home at lunchtime on the Saturday, and by teatime we were ready to set off for a birthday party. In the meantime, I fixed an electrical problem in the Kombi. The mains plug sockets are Australian, and the rocker switches had stopped working on the trip. I took the panel off and unscrewed the two halves to be greeted by a shower of tiny springs, brittle 45yr old plastic parts, and two tiny black pieces that had broken off inside. Not mendable as such, and I can’t get a replacement in the UK, but I reassembled it all (with much difficulty!) and it is working again for now.

The birthday party was a 50th for a very good friend, and involved teepees, alpacas and Scottish ceilidh dancing in the field. All tremendous fun, and the Kombi was welcomed to complete the festival vibe!

Plenty of travelling in the Kombi this year!
We’re just back from a long weekend at the ‘Volksfling’ VW rally in Biggar in the Scottish Borders. It’s not been held for the last two years and so everyone was super excited!
We were planning to take the Ghia and the Kombi, but the weather on Friday was ridiculously windy, so we took the Kombi and our Audi with the plan to collect the Ghia on Saturday evening for the concours on Sunday.
Pics show road barriers blown down and the struggles folk were having to get tents up in the gale. We kept the roof down and didn’t put our tent up till the wind died down late in the evening.

I can’t remember if I’ve posted pics of the portable solar setup I’ve come up with for charging the leisure battery and powering phones etc.
80w lightweight solar panel feeds onto a homemade box with a charge controller, fuse box and feeds to 2x battery chargers. 12v and USB sockets and a couple of voltmeters to show the solar panel voltage (16.7v in the bigger pic) and the battery voltage (12.8v)

It is a very pretty spot, and a great atmosphere. The wind had meant that the organisers couldn’t put up some of the marquees and music tents, but everyone seemed to be having a great time!
Our dear friend Nina and her black lab, Peanut, joined us for a nights camping and seemed to get right into the VW tribal experience. Medo took it all in her stride, as usual!

The event is at the agricultural show ground, and there is a good selection of air cooled and water cooled vehicles on show. The blue patina beetle was one of a pair that had driven to Rome and back before the show-impressive!

We were having a very relaxed time, including walks and ice creams in the town of Biggar.
I did have a two hour round trip on the Saturday evening to collect the Ghia from home. It was still windy enough to try and blow the car cover off . There was rain and mist forecast, and she was entered in the show for Sunday, so I didn’t want extra cleaning work! I ended up strapping the cover on!

We really had a great time, and it was capped off by the Ghia winning a prize for ‘best engine’ in the concours. I was delighted-I’ve worked hard to get it to a ‘factory’ look.
The drive home saw us get caught in some rain, and I have a day at home to put the VWs to bed before we set off for Croatia again (but in our ‘normal’ car this time!)

Superb pics as always!

I totally understand why you spend so much time out in Scotland, we are currently sat overlooking Fortrose Bay having been exploring Scotland since 13th May. The beauty of it has blown us away, it’s amazing & something different around every corner. We cannot wait to plan for next year!

We have been maybe welcome no matter where we have stayed & the people great.

I’ll do a write up of our journey early June.
