Great stuff, thanks for sharing Neal. Love living in New Zealand, but I definitely miss the way history drips from every corner back home, if I can call it that after 16 years away...
And pubs. I think the reason I stopped drinking is that without a proper pub to do it in, it's just not worth the effort. A good pub is a thing to cherish...! |

Our friends were staying in a rental cottage, and our initial plan was to ‘camp’ on their driveway but we discovered the owners lived next door and it wouldn’t go down well! So, we found a very cheap, European style ‘Aire’ in the next village, Kingussie. Almost zero facilities but very cheap and they had fresh water and a (portable!) toilet. The camp spot was virtually on the railway station platform on the main line to Edinburgh, so it was cute seeing the trains on their way through, including the Caledonian sleeper on its way to London.
Our own sleeper compartment was more comfortable though!
We were on the edge of the Cairngorm mountain range and the scenery is spectacular in any weather. Luckily it was bright and sunny (although cold and windy!)

At the risk of being accused of non-VW content I thought it was worth sharing our encounter with two intrepid American travellers we met. Their journey is certainly inspiring and I feel is very much in the spirit of this thread.
Andy and Dawn set off from Oregon at the start of the global pandemic and, undeterred, have travelled across and around North America, crossed from Baltimore to Liverpool, England, toured Europe and Scandinavia and plan to circumnavigate Africa, cross Asia, traverse Australia and travel up through South America. The map on the bonnet is evolving as they go. Wow.
Our own modest trip took us South again, past Loch an Eileen, through Perthshire, towards Dundee…

We arrived home at lunchtime on the Saturday, and by teatime we were ready to set off for a birthday party. In the meantime, I fixed an electrical problem in the Kombi. The mains plug sockets are Australian, and the rocker switches had stopped working on the trip. I took the panel off and unscrewed the two halves to be greeted by a shower of tiny springs, brittle 45yr old plastic parts, and two tiny black pieces that had broken off inside. Not mendable as such, and I can’t get a replacement in the UK, but I reassembled it all (with much difficulty!) and it is working again for now.
The birthday party was a 50th for a very good friend, and involved teepees, alpacas and Scottish ceilidh dancing in the field. All tremendous fun, and the Kombi was welcomed to complete the festival vibe!

Plenty of travelling in the Kombi this year!
We’re just back from a long weekend at the ‘Volksfling’ VW rally in Biggar in the Scottish Borders. It’s not been held for the last two years and so everyone was super excited!
We were planning to take the Ghia and the Kombi, but the weather on Friday was ridiculously windy, so we took the Kombi and our Audi with the plan to collect the Ghia on Saturday evening for the concours on Sunday.
Pics show road barriers blown down and the struggles folk were having to get tents up in the gale. We kept the roof down and didn’t put our tent up till the wind died down late in the evening.

Superb pics as always!
I totally understand why you spend so much time out in Scotland, we are currently sat overlooking Fortrose Bay having been exploring Scotland since 13th May. The beauty of it has blown us away, it’s amazing & something different around every corner. We cannot wait to plan for next year!
We have been maybe welcome no matter where we have stayed & the people great.
I’ll do a write up of our journey early June. _________________ Major; 1977 Westfalia Campmobile
