As I said, I have done what I am able to do with the roofline rust, where the pop-top contacted the bodywork. It's a fairly cosmetic job, and these pics are before and after. I have since washed, polished and waxed the roof, and the new paint blends in not too badly. You can just see the clear vinyl protective strip I have put over the paint.

I've posted the detail in my distributor thread, but the original, 140,000 mile distributor had never been serviced or replaced. It's date code (729) is one month before the Kombi was built, so I'm pretty sure it's the original.
It wasn't actually in too bad a state, other than a missing fibre washer and worn shims, so it has cleaned up very nicely. I've already put a restored one on the engine, so this will sit as a spare.
Before and after...

What a day!
We're having a fantastic spell of weather in Scotland this summer, and we have a pair of ladies visiting us from Auckland, New Zealand. I had heard about a classic car run from the National mining museum to Lennoxlove, the stately home that is the home of his Grace, the Duke of Hamilton! I rang the organisers, and they had a spare place at short notice, so we all crammed into the Kombi and headed for the start at the mining museum...

A couple of VWs, this split screen you will realise has a chequered history via Thailand...

The scenic run took us via a whisky distillery before ending up at Lennoxlove. Picnics in the sun and a house tour followed...

1929 fabric bodied Austin 7 apparently! Looked very nicely done!

I've long since stopped worrying about winners and losers, judging at these affairs is wildly subjective! I just love the chance to chat, show off the Kombi and tell some of our tales! (Shona has promised that one day we will have a display board with photos and some of the story of the bus, but I'll believe it when I see it!)

I can’t remember a Summer like it Gill!
Fingers crossed it lasts, did you see this video clip from Gullane Hill a couple of weeks ago when they were starting preparations for the Scottish Open?

We've a couple of camping trips planned, but the last day we were out in the Kombi there was quite a smell of fuel. The consensus on another thread was that it is probably the 40year old fuel filler pipes, or the tank vent tubes.
So, I've ordered the replacement tubes (including the MB Sprinter angled fuel pipe to replace the NLA rubber between the tank and the filler pipe).
I'm going to have a good go at sorting it on Thursday, without dropping the engine, through the firewall and the 'pie plate' hole. You'll see how I get on!
It did occur to me that if I can remove all of the top of engine ancillaries and mask up, then maybe I could respray the inside of the engine compartment and battery tray areas. I suspect I'm being optimistic, but I'll let you know how it looks!
While the carbs are off, I'm going to go up a size on the main jets to try and reduce the overheating issue that I'm chasing down. More in the carb thread here:

PDSIT carbs on a 2.0l engine

Right.
I started chasing down the fuel smell today.
First step was to remove a bunch of stuff from the top of the engine so I could get off the access panel; air filter, carbs, Blazecut etc

This means you can free up the fuel tank panel. Mine had lost the self tappers you access from the underside of the bus long ago. Once the panel was free, it still needed one top edge levered out before it would release into the engine bay.

There is just enough room to wriggle the panel out into the daylight.
There seems to be the remains of a foam strip around the lower edges to make a seal, and the top had been 'sealed' with grey tape. Probably not factory!

Once I could see in to the fuel tank compartment, under the thick layer of dust (!) the hose between the tank and the filler pipe did seem to be suspiciously clean on the lower half, and in close-up you can see the perished rubber. Looks like a good call!
I'll replace the vent rubber connections too, the plastic lines measure about 7mm, so I'll use the larger 7mm fuel hose. I'm not looking forward to the one behind the spare wheel well (in fact, I'll leave it until last, maybe it won't get done!...)

Well, my polite summary of this job is that it is awkward and difficult!
Access is the main problem, and working out how to thread long bits of metal pipe through openings that are nowhere near either end!
After releasing the rubber at the filler cap and pushing it into the bus it became clear that I could not remove the metal pipe until I removed the rubber at the tank end. You can see that both rubber parts are badly perished, although there is no sign of a breach on the inside.
Next step is replacing the small sections of vent tubing...

Those hoses all look suspicious, things should be much less stinky now.
That to edge of the tank panel is mangled, it should be flat and sticking straight up, as it is now I doubt the sides will seal well. The grey tape was put there by VW.
To install the tank panel the top has to tuck up into a channel on the body first and then the bottom swings into place, it'll run into the tin over the flywheel so you'll either have to pry and mangle, or lower the engine a few inches.

You're right Harry, just in time, and yes, we're having the best Summer anyone can remember!

Thanks for the info busdaddy, the panel did come out without too much of a struggle, so I think it'll be ok..I've replaced the foam with some closed cell foam strip and I'll replace the grey tape with duct tape probably!

The new rubber at the filler looks poorer quality than the VW original that was on, but I'm pleased that the screw holes at the filler line up much better than the original one!

I've stalled now though, because the tank to filler pipe rubber hasn't arrived in the post, so I'll have to wait. I've replaced the carb jets though, so hopefully I'll be able to get everything back together when I get the rubber in the post.

There is an easier way. I'm 6ft tall but found it relatively easy to replace that tricky piece of hose under the spare wheel well when the rear of the vehicle was jacked up onto axle stands, as you are then able to do it pretty much standing up.

If the bus is not jacked up then attempting the job is a complete PITA, to the extent you give up on it, unless you are as nimble and short as Yoda that is.
