I agree, those judges have no taste
Although that fabric bodied Austin (or whateverthehellitis) is really neat too. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

We've a couple of camping trips planned, but the last day we were out in the Kombi there was quite a smell of fuel. The consensus on another thread was that it is probably the 40year old fuel filler pipes, or the tank vent tubes.
So, I've ordered the replacement tubes (including the MB Sprinter angled fuel pipe to replace the NLA rubber between the tank and the filler pipe).
I'm going to have a good go at sorting it on Thursday, without dropping the engine, through the firewall and the 'pie plate' hole. You'll see how I get on!
It did occur to me that if I can remove all of the top of engine ancillaries and mask up, then maybe I could respray the inside of the engine compartment and battery tray areas. I suspect I'm being optimistic, but I'll let you know how it looks!
While the carbs are off, I'm going to go up a size on the main jets to try and reduce the overheating issue that I'm chasing down. More in the carb thread here:

I can’t remember a Summer like it Gill!
Fingers crossed it lasts, did you see this video clip from Gullane Hill a couple of weeks ago when they were starting preparations for the Scottish Open?

There is just enough room to wriggle the panel out into the daylight.
There seems to be the remains of a foam strip around the lower edges to make a seal, and the top had been 'sealed' with grey tape. Probably not factory!
Once I could see in to the fuel tank compartment, under the thick layer of dust (!) the hose between the tank and the filler pipe did seem to be suspiciously clean on the lower half, and in close-up you can see the perished rubber. Looks like a good call!
I'll replace the vent rubber connections too, the plastic lines measure about 7mm, so I'll use the larger 7mm fuel hose. I'm not looking forward to the one behind the spare wheel well (in fact, I'll leave it until last, maybe it won't get done!...)

Those hoses all look suspicious, things should be much less stinky now.
That to edge of the tank panel is mangled, it should be flat and sticking straight up, as it is now I doubt the sides will seal well. The grey tape was put there by VW.
To install the tank panel the top has to tuck up into a channel on the body first and then the bottom swings into place, it'll run into the tin over the flywheel so you'll either have to pry and mangle, or lower the engine a few inches. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Pfew... those rubbers look bad, just in time!
I replaced mine 2 years ago when engine and gearbox were out just to be sure they had some cracks but not as bad as yours.
Is that sunshine i see those pics |

You're right Harry, just in time, and yes, we're having the best Summer anyone can remember!
Thanks for the info busdaddy, the panel did come out without too much of a struggle, so I think it'll be ok..I've replaced the foam with some closed cell foam strip and I'll replace the grey tape with duct tape probably!
The new rubber at the filler looks poorer quality than the VW original that was on, but I'm pleased that the screw holes at the filler line up much better than the original one!
I've stalled now though, because the tank to filler pipe rubber hasn't arrived in the post, so I'll have to wait. I've replaced the carb jets though, so hopefully I'll be able to get everything back together when I get the rubber in the post. _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper

There is an easier way. I'm 6ft tall but found it relatively easy to replace that tricky piece of hose under the spare wheel well when the rear of the vehicle was jacked up onto axle stands, as you are then able to do it pretty much standing up.
If the bus is not jacked up then attempting the job is a complete PITA, to the extent you give up on it, unless you are as nimble and short as Yoda that is. _________________ 1965 Type 1 Deluxe (1200cc)
