yep, that pic shows me what i needed to know. it seems to be working correctly now. the long slot threw me off, made me think the tab should have slid in it when the lid is being closed. thanks for the pics. _________________ WANTED:

I'm new to the bus world, but been into VWs for 2 decades. Not the smartest guy on the planet either, but I am an engineer... With all that being said I can NOT for the life of me figure out how this rear deck lid hinge is supposed to close when installed correctly. I have to pull the spring loaded portion out of its housing to get the deck lid to close. I assumed the hinge was broken by the P.O., so I replaced it. Hinge was perfect, along with the spring...same issue. It gets within about 1 inch or so and won't go a bit more. It would appear that the slot that allows the hinge to slide fore and aft should also have a vertical option for clearance. Please enlighten me and tell me I'm a complete moron and have been doing something very wrong for the last 3 weeks. HELP!!! The dam thing clanks like crazy just free hanging in there.

Wade McGee

I can't use the split spring type of prop, way not correct. I have the proper 62 stuff, but I think the previous owner (or someone down the line) re-welded the guts a bit low...thus messing up the pivot point.
I relocated the pivot point on the elbow by .75" and now it works like butter. I'll snap some pics tomorrow. I assumed they were factory welds on the mounts...suppose I was wrong.

That decklid is off a '66-'67 bus with the push button style latch setup. The early decklid uses a church key. Do you have the wrong apron too? |

This is my first "real" bus, so I'm a little in the dark. Chances are that I probably do have a later model apron and decklid. I never paid it much attention, the lines are dead on and seals perfectly. I assumed it was all proper. I guess I need to do some closer inspecting. _________________ Regards,

My '62 panel was the same way.....had a later decklid and apron with no decklid prop. I ended up swapping them out for some correct '62 parts so I could run the stock decklid prop. Much better than the broom handle I was using before. |

Here's an NOS one I bought off a samba member I was going to use it but I found another. I have been trying to work something out with gerson so he can reproduce it but we haven't fully communicated yet. Ignore Yogi he was just there when it arrived.

I would like to find the engineer that designed that prop and fire him myself. Everybody says how great vw engineering is and I completely disagree.
Just look at that prop and tell me it will last 20 years. metal on metal wear. the bent tabs. Come on.
Vw has so many engineering flaws. But if you look at their marketing it is truly amazing. I actually begrudgingly have owned literally hundreds of VWs over the years including a TDI jetta which is what brought me back to VW after several years of my middle finger up at them. The truth is Nothing has changed. Still electronic and wiring issues. Many whaaaats. But how can you beat the MPG of a TDI 40-45. In the early years it was the same for me. A bug was a cheap and relatively good mpg car. _________________ Owned Countless VWs over the last 35 years.

You have a mid-64 to 1965 deck lid which uses the later prop spring assembly so it can't fold up correctly.

Anyone have a picture of the bolt that attaches the prop to the lid mount ? |
