This morning, while stopped for gas in NM I fiddled with my aftermarket rostera cruise switch because it wasn’t turning on. Dropped the fuse panel to check wiring. Switch problem fixed but then I saw some smoke emerge from the area. Behind the lower relay holder. I now have no power to fuel pump. Engine (ej22) cranks. Also battery and oil dummy lights not coming on. Pump is not priming. Van is an 84 westy.
Checked relays. No. 24 in the pic below clicks when ign on. I see no burned wires. The relay holder on the left upper sidewall above the grounding tree was wet, and post 85 on the right relay (also 24) was loose/broken.
A nice mechanic let me have a few 4 pin relays for free but I have no idea if they are correct to use. I’m kinda stranded and at a loss. Any ideas from the community?
Chris

You may have disconnected a wire deep in the back of that whole rats nest that is the under dash spaghetti.
I would get a good flashlight and really take a good look for any wires just flopping about.
Disconnect the neg battery terminal first.
Also see if you knocked a wire off one of the ground attachments. |

Where in NM?
What post exactly is broken?
Is it the post on the actual relay or the relay holder? |

Get an inline fuse holder and wire power directly to fuel pump. Pull fuse when not running engine, until you get home and have less stress. _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

I’m in Santa Rosa.
The post that broken is position 85.
Totally loose and I can jiggle it.
I can’t say for certain what that relay does. _________________ 1984 Wolfsburg Westy, EJ22.

That 24 relay on the right of the 2 relay set is the high speed radiator fan relay. The one on the left is the coolant level warning relay. The one in the main fuse/relay panel that clicks with key on is the "X" relay. None of these 3 relays can prevent a stock van from starting or running and probably not in a converted van either.
In Vanagons fuel pump relays are generally part of the engine harnesses and are not found up in the dash area.

Because I am a halfway decent vanagon owner I have a spare ign switch in the glovebox. Threw that in. Boom he started. Thanks all who chimes in. Back to the road... _________________ 1984 Wolfsburg Westy, EJ22.
