Don't laugh, it cleaned the heck out of those heads! Pretty sure I have less than $50 in it. Works great. Laughing

Looks great to me! thanks.

Will be watching your progress... I have a 1914 that is near finished for my 69 baja... Lots of help from Vallero's machine shop to correct all the bad that was done to this engine by a prior owner. Fly cutting every where to get things straight uggg...

What's the best way of contacting DPR? Email or phone?

I shot him an email yesterday (holiday weekend) but I know some guys are so busy with the shop they don't email much.. Thanks.. Giving him a call Tuesday.

I was reading up on cast cranks; just couldn't stomach using this one. Every thread asks the same question over and over.. "Should I use this cast crank?" I have yet to see a positive reply to that question... Hopefully I won't take a loss on my impulse buy with the SCAT I got. Smile

When Jake Raby says he builds his 1,000+ engines on DPR cranks... I'm getting a DPR crank.

re ground german with welded on counterweights,he wont take a crank that's been cut as a core..check out the w100 regrind cams and re surfaced lifters too..
like everything else on these cars, used german parts (in this case with quality machine work) are best.

I'm not sure about this welded area. I will be looking pretty hard at it once the case halves are clean.

The heck?? These grooves don't go all the way through, but I don't like them. They will be radiused to help prevent future stress cracks.

Crankshaft is ground .010" under on all journals. #2 main bearing was showing copper, and the #2 cam bearing halves had some corrosion-type damage that I'm not familiar with.
Lifter faces are worn out - flat. The cam looked pretty good though. I'll hang on to the crank and cam gears to go on the rebuild; the cam is a +1. Distributor gear and drive both looked pretty good.

Planning on doing the alternator stand stud-removal mod for a bolt-down stand; same with the fuel pump, I'm planning on using stock T4 fuel pump triple-square drive bolts, but probably just going straight into the case and not an insert. Mock-up will tell!

Case specs coming after the halves get done pickling in degreaser.. they nasty.

Grooves are just from the engine tin and nothing to worry about.

If you are going to remove engine case studs for bolts, install steel inserts like Time-Sert to prevent the threads from being worn out all too soon....

Interesting weld spot, too bad not also welded in the lower pocket that tends to crack if bored for bigger cylinders.

I ceased use of DPR cranks in 2012 after using them for almost 20 years.
That's all I am willing to say on the subject.

My, this rabbit hole is just getting started now.

If you could recommend any crank from any rebuilder, for a stockish rebuild... What and who would it be?

She doesn't have any friends..

Lets see,Jake quit using him after 20 years..could be a number of reasons for that, not just workmanship...but hey, there are other folks out there welding up and balancing Vw cranks if Jakes comment makes you hinkey..Ive used a couple of DPR cranks with great results and would use them again.

1.Tin wearing into the case...ok

2. weld behind no.3,no problem, inspect

3. rods didn't get hot,but Id swap'em out for a balanced set if you go with the balanced crank..

I'll drop a supplier that's unwilling to meet my requirements for quality and consistency faster than any other reason. I'll give them several chances to remedy the issue and I'll even write them a formal letter to explain the conditions and corrective actions that I require.

If they don't conform, they are not given any further chances.

When my name is brought up as an endorsement for a product, and isn't accurate- I must set the record straight. Thats exactly what I did in this thread.
