Luggage Rack drain filter / screen
After cleaning out the gunk under the luggage rack I was inspired by these -
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=600673&highlight=luggage+rack
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=451036
I wanted to access the outside and remove easily if need be. I did not want to glue or rivet anything in so I found these at the True Value bins. Had to slightly enlarge hole to 5/8". If drilling keep in mind the front/center hole is only about 1/2" below the roof rack.

Excellent, let's see how they hold out to UV rays.
Nice idea. |

Thanks! Did consider the UV and am curious too. Luckily the replacement cost is low. The specification pic cut off the price but they're $0.43 each or $2.50 w/tax for all 5 _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace

Nifty idea. Now all you need is some Penetrol on the luggage rack, and maybe on the rest of the poptop. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

Except... Penetrol is said to turn white tops to yellow. Works great on colored tops.
Op- if you're concerned about uv... spray some 303 on em. _________________ 1990 Multivan - "Ohana"

I've used Penetrol on my white Westy top many times. Any yellow haze is extremely minimal.
Good idea with the drainage hole fillers. I wonder how easily they'll clog? _________________ '86 Wolfy Westy Weekender

Will you please post some photos of your white top with Penetrol in this thread:

I've been looking to see how bad the yellowing is (or isn't). Thanks! _________________ 1990 Multivan - "Ohana"

As I've mentioned ever since I introduced the possibility of using the Penetrol years ago to brighten up the faded pop tops to almost new, I did mention that the stuff gives a slight yellowish haze to white.
I used it on a 22 ft. chaulked out cuddy cabin boat I acquired for just about nothing, and rubbed my ass of--to no avail.
The gelcoat would not stay bright at all over a weeks period of time.
I got tired of buffing & rubbing, and an old salt I knew introduced the stuff to me to restore the fiberglass finish & make it last.
This was back in 1978.
It was not at all terrible or really obvious---
But it did last the duration of the summer--
So for a once a year application on the deck & hull it was well worth the time , and the faint yellowish tinge.
If your pop top is really hairey & scanky--forget about the Penetrol.
It was not sent by Jesus to resurrect a dead porus fiberglass top--
Dulled out & chauky--yes it will work fine, and last for a long time.
If it's got hair growing--Petit , Awlgrip, or Interlux white deck & hull paint is going to be your only saviour.
Then you won't have to worry about the slight yellowish cast of the Penetrol.
Be adventerous--do something, it's all a learning experience. _________________ T.K. |

Thanks. So far so good.
One of the things I was hoping for was since they are on the top rather than the bottom of the hole I could wipe off what ever was clogging them and what ever was small enough to go through would be small in size. Also, they could be removed easily from the top for cleaning or removal is the OEM holes turned out to be preferable. _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace

When I had my luggage compartment off, I siliconed some screen t of the bottom the holes. They clogged up horribly and the luggage compartment didn't drain so a lot of dirt and grime stayed in the luggage rack after the water evaporated.
I'm not sure if anything is different in the way I did it, but I would not recommend this "upgrade". But it was easy enough to poke out the screens to put it back to normal. It might work with a different type of screen, more of a mesh than a screen. It just clogs too easily. |

My thpughts too, why make the drain less effective, higher risk of clogging?
how about a screen or other cover over the luggage well to exclude clogging debris, or better still a solid water tight cover?
now if debris is a problem of clogging the stock drains, a rather large screen one that stands high, and larger diameter than the drain hole could serve to keep the drain clear for a longer period between periodic cleaning, as the surface area of that filter would be much larger than a tiny drain insert Seams one leaf could block this insert filter, Go for a larger filter if frequent blockages to the stock system are a problem.
good luck, may all your problems drain away _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

Of course the traditional item for those holes are washing machine hose filters:
Most things that stop the stuff will also clog - but these are easy to pop out and back in. |

If you owned a Westy you would know that the drain holes let dirt, small leaves, etc. to collect under the luggage rack where, if left unchecked, will cause rust. It's a bit of a pain the remove the luggage rack to clean so the screens help.
I just use a garden hose to clean the screens I installed on mine whenever I wash the van. We have very fine Tamarack needles around here in the fall and only the fine metal screens from faucets/washing machines work to keep them out. (I just bought the stainless screens only from Ace and epoxied them on) The rest of the year they don't really clog. I guess it's gonna matter where you live and what kind of debris you get. _________________ Currently:

if you knew about filters, you'd know a larger one is less likely to clog as fast as a small one. _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

the purpose of this screes solution:
screen is on top so easily manually wiped clear unlike screen on bottom gluing mesh underneath where it created a well for debis to collect in
easily removable of it doesn't suit needs
mesh is not too big or not too small for what neds to get filtered in my climate. _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace
