Hi.

I have an 87 Vanagon. I want to add a 2 inch trailer hitch so i can use my Thule hitch bike rack. I was wondering if anybody has installed a hitch on a vanagon and what the best way to do it would be. not sure if it can bolt directly on, or if it would need to be welded.

thanks

dan

Burley unit was easy to fit to our fibreglass bumper model. Solid as a rock, too.

I have the GoWesty 2" hitch mounted under the fiberglass rear bumper (attaches securely to the tow eyes and engine carrier bar) on my '90 Syncro Westy.

Installation wasn't difficult - though starting nuts through the carrier bar up next to the heat shield was a bit of a pain. Someone on this forum suggested that I 'hand tighten' all fasteners to begin with...then crank 'em down to finish the installation. Great tip!

GoWesty does NOT recommend 'older' 2" receiver accessories with this hitch for a good reason. I inserted a 1 1/4" sleeve for a friend's smaller bike rack...then had to use a slide hammer and LOTS of PB Blaster/PBR and force to remove it (another tip from a Sambanista).

I run an Allen 4 Bike Swing Away carrier. In retrospect - I think I would appreciate a little more clearance with the Burley or RMW hitch. YMWV.
